Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking motivated and service-oriented individuals for our Public Health Internship Program. This internship provides an opportunity for currently enrolled college or university students to gain hands-on experience in a professional public health environment.
Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of people and communities through education, policy, research, prevention, and access to care. It focuses on promoting wellness, preventing disease, and ensuring conditions that support the health of all individuals.
Location: Internships are onsite at the Nebraska State Office Building in Lincoln, NE.

Interns will be placed in one primary area of public health based on their interests, academic background, and the needs of the department. While assigned to a specific program, interns will also have opportunities to learn about the broader public health system through cross-program collaboration, staff meetings, and exposure to various department initiatives.

Potential placement areas may include (subject to availability each semester):

  • Epidemiology - Data analysis, disease surveillance, and outbreak investigation support

  • Health Promotion - Public health campaigns, wellness initiatives, and community outreach

  • Lifespan Health Services - Programs focused on maternal and child health, aging services, and health equity

  • Organizational Advancement - Strategic planning, internal process evaluation, and policy development

  • Health Data and Statistics - Data collection, analysis, visualization, and reporting

  • Occupational Licensure - Support with licensure application processing, compliance, and stakeholder communication

  • Health Services and Systems - Evaluation and improvement of public health programs and service delivery

This internship offers valuable experience for students preparing for careers in public health, healthcare administration, policy, or related fields. Internship format (in-person, hybrid, or remote) may vary based on project needs and office location.


Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Promotion, Statistics, or a related field.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data analysis software preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Adaptable and eager to learn about various aspects of public health.

Location: Internships are onsite at the Nebraska State Office Building in Lincoln, NE.
