What is a public address announcer?
A Public Address Announcer is responsible for making live announcements at events such as sports games, ceremonies, or public gatherings. They relay important information, introduce participants, and enhance the audience's experience with clear and engaging speech. This role requires a strong voice, excellent diction, and the ability to read scripts or improvise smoothly. Announcers often work in high-energy environments and must remain composed under pressure.
What does a public address announcer do?
A typical workday for a Public Address Announcer involves preparing scripts or cue sheets, familiarizing themselves with event details, and collaborating with event coordinators, technical teams, and other staff to ensure accurate and timely announcements. Announcers often arrive early to soundcheck equipment and may work irregular hours depending on event schedules, including evenings or weekends. During the event, they must remain attentive to real-time updates or last-minute changes, adjusting their announcements as needed. This role requires quick thinking, strong teamwork, and the ability to maintain professionalism under pressure, making each workday both dynamic and rewarding.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a public address announcer?
To thrive as a Public Address Announcer, you need a clear speaking voice, strong enunciation, and familiarity with the subject matter—usually supported by experience in broadcasting, communications, or similar fields. Knowledge of PA system operation, basic audio equipment, and in some cases, event-specific software is often required. Confidence, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help announcers engage audiences and adjust to changes or unexpected circumstances. These skills are crucial because the announcer's performance directly impacts the audience experience and the smooth delivery of event information.

Description
The Voice of University AthleticsSan Francisco University High School | San Francisco, California
San Francisco University High School (UHS) is looking for the next Voice of University Athletics.
We are seeking an energetic, professional, and engaging Public Address Announcer who can help bring our home athletic events to life. This role is about more than reading names and announcing the score. Our PA Announcer is an important part of the game-day experience and helps set the tone for our student-athletes, families, fans, and visiting teams.
The ideal candidate understands how to bring energy to a gym without making the event about themselves. They know when to build excitement, when to let the moment speak for itself, and how to create an atmosphere that is professional, welcoming, and uniquely University.
UHS is guided by the core values of Inquiry, Care, Integrity, Agency, and Interconnection. The Public Address Announcer will join an Athletics Department that believes interscholastic athletics is an important part of the overall educational experience and an opportunity for students to develop teamwork, resilience, leadership, accountability, and confidence.
ABOUT UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
Founded in 1975, San Francisco University High School is a coeducational independent day school serving approximately 540 students in grades 9-12. Located in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood, UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self.
University Athletics sponsors 23 varsity teams, with many programs also competing at the junior varsity and Frosh/Soph levels. Our goal is to provide student-athletes and our community with a first-class interscholastic athletics experience.
THE ROLE
The Public Address Announcer will serve as the primary in-venue voice for select University Athletics home competitions and special events.
The majority of assignments will include basketball and volleyball, with additional opportunities to announce postseason or special events in soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and other sports.
The PA Announcer may also support signature University Athletics events, including Chase Day, Oracle Day, Senior Nights, Big Red Fridays, championship events, rivalry games, and other special celebrations.
This is a game-day position for someone who loves sports, understands the importance of atmosphere, and takes pride in creating a memorable experience for everyone in attendance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the public address voice for assigned University Athletics home competitions and special events.
- Deliver clear, accurate, enthusiastic, and professional in-game announcements.
- Introduce teams, starting lineups, coaches, officials, and special guests.
- Recognize milestones, Senior Night participants, championship teams, and other special moments.
- Develop and prepare game scripts, announcements, and promotional reads in collaboration with the Athletics Department.
- Assist with game-day music planning and the overall flow of the in-venue experience.
- Work closely with Athletics staff, coaches, game management personnel, and event staff.
- Help create an energetic environment while maintaining appropriate neutrality, professionalism, and sportsmanship.
- Ensure names, pronunciations, team information, and event details are prepared and communicated accurately.
- Follow all UHS, Bay Area Conference, North Coast Section, and CIF policies and expectations.
- Represent University High School and University Athletics with professionalism, care, and integrity.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The successful candidate will bring personality, preparation, and presence to every event.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a strong, clear, and engaging speaking voice.
- Brings authentic energy and enthusiasm to athletic events.
- Understands sports and the rhythm of a live competition.
- Can read the room and adjust their energy to the moment.
- Is comfortable speaking in front of large crowds.
- Is organized, prepared, dependable, and punctual.
- Can pronounce names accurately and takes pride in getting the details right.
- Understands that high school athletics should be competitive, exciting, and centered on students.
- Can work respectfully with students, coaches, officials, families, and visiting schools from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
- Is comfortable receiving feedback and collaborating as part of a game-day team.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required.
- College coursework or a degree in communications, broadcasting, journalism, sports media, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Previous public address, broadcasting, emcee, radio, podcasting, or live-event experience preferred.
- Knowledge of basketball and volleyball is strongly preferred.
- Availability for afternoon, evening, and occasional weekend competitions throughout the school year.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to arrive well in advance of assigned events.
All finalists will be asked to submit an audition clip demonstrating clarity, energy, pronunciation, and overall announcing style.
WHY UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS?
We take the game-day experience seriously.
Our goal is to create an environment that feels special when student-athletes walk into the gym, step onto the field, or compete in front of their school community. The Public Address Announcer plays an important role in creating that atmosphere.
The voice matters. The energy matters. The details matter.
We are looking for someone who wants to help us continue to raise the standard of the University Athletics experience.
COMPENSATION
This is a seasonal, part-time position paying $50 per hour. Scheduling is based on the University Athletics home competition and special event calendar.
Application Process
Ready to Join Our Team? If you're ready to contribute to a vibrant school community and play a key role in our athletic events, please submit your application through the UHS website at http://www.sfuhs.org.
