Position Summary:

The Bailiff works under the supervision of the Chief Court Clerk of the Puyallup Tribal Court. The Bailiff maintains the safety, security, neutrality, integrity and confidentiality of the court system. The Bailiff prevents life-threatening activities directed towards judges, court personnel, jurorsโ€™ witnesses, defendants, general public; maintains order in the court rooms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Required to attend job related, in-service, meetings, and training to maintain professional and technical knowledge.
  2. Secures the court sessions by providing protection and assistance for Court personnel and the public.
  3. Announces the judgesโ€™ entrance and departure into the court room and ensures proper courtroom decorum.
  4. Be present at court in the court room prior to and during court proceedings to assist during hearings as a security presence.
  5. Observes and analyzes situations for the potential need for law enforcement intervention.
  6. Moves court documents and evidence to and from judges, attorneys, witnesses and others as directed.
  7. Performs daily inspections and monitors all court facilities as necessary to conduct the courts business on a daily basis.
  8. Maintain order and security in the courtroom, waiting area; ability to calm and control disruptive individuals.
  9. Monitors all entrances into the courthouse by utilizing a metal detector for inspection of weapons and contraband.
  10. May serve notices, subpoenas, summons or other court documents for the court.
  11. Responsible for handling incoming and outgoing mail, including drop box for Court house.
  12. Must understand and able to apply and enforce rules governing court room decorum.
  13. Oversees the jury during trials and assists with the needs of jurors.
  14. Assist the judge and clerk as needed in carrying out the courts business to promote and ensure smooth hearings.
  15. Bailiff often functions as a public information source for persons using court facilities, responding to inquiries and giving directions in a professional and respectful manner.
  16. Operates copiers, phones, fax machines, and completes typing.
  17. Maintains confidentiality at all times.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be willing to attend all applicable training within one year. Must have the knowledge and ability to use word processing, database and spreadsheet software as well as electronic and hard copy files.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.ย  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.ย  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.ย  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.ย  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

Must have a valid Washington Driverโ€™s License and insurance and must maintain them during employment. First aid and CPR certification maintained throughout employment.

Strong customer service skills to work with the public. Must have knowledge and understanding of Tribal Court Processes. Must abide by court uniform guidelines.
