Job description

TITLE Mower Operator QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent,
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license,
  • Any combination of experience or training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Physical and mental stamina and ability to perform job functions, tasks and duties.
REPORTS TO  Lead Groundskeeper SUPERVISES  Non-Applicable TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT  12 Months PAY GRADE  18 JOB GOAL  Maintain all facility's grounds at a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and an attractive visual appearance.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                             

  • Performs grounds keeping and building maintenance duties.
  • Ensures caution is taken when children or any personnel are present.
  • Makes daily checks on equipment for proper mower deck alignments and to provide safe operation of equipment.
  • Performs daily lubrication, minor repairs, and mechanical adjustments and filter changes on a routine basis.
  • Makes daily checks on trailer lights for proper operation of turning and stopping indicators.
  • Safely operates vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
  • Maintains or repairs tools, equipment, or structures, such as buildings, greenhouses, fences, or benches, using hand or power tools.
  • Becomes familiar with assigned mowing areas to be able to avoid hazards and damage to equipment and promote individual safety.
  • Performs grounds keeping and building maintenance duties.
  • Cuts lawn using hand, power or riding mower and trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.
  • Applies pesticide to rid grounds of pests such as mosquitoes, ants, wasps, ticks, and others under the direction of the Lead Groundskeeper, Maintenance Supervisor, or IPM Coordinator.
  • Applies fertilizer to ground to enhance growth.
  • Cares for natural turf fields, making sure the underlying soil has the required composition to allow proper drainage and to support the grasses used on the fields.
  • Shovels snow from walkways and sprinkle ice down to keep people from falling.
  • Sweeps or blows walkway free of debris.
  • Cut / prune trees and shrubs for safety and proper growth using equipment such as but not limited to: shears, pruners, or chain saws
  • Attaches wires from planted trees to support stakes and remove when needed.
  • Hauls and spreads soils as needed for repairs and improvements.
  • Installs lawn furniture.
  • Maintains irrigation systems, including winterizing the systems, starting them up in spring, and maintaining settings
  • Uses irrigation methods to adjust the amount of water consumption and to prevent waste.
  • Waters lawns, trees, or plants, using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans
  • Provides proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features.
  • Landscapes by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes.
  • Trims or picks flowers and clean flowerbeds.
  • Rakes, mulches, and composts leaves.
  • Follows planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers or foliage.
  • Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, or shrubs and apply mulch for protection, using gardening tools.
  • Gathers and removes litter.
  • Report maintenance corrections needed at a site in a timely manner to Maintenance Supervisor. Items such as but not limited to: damaged fencing, burnt light bulbs, painting touch-ups, etc.
  • Safety issues shall be reported immediately to Maintenance Supervisor. Items such as but not limited to: gas leaks, exposed electrical, sharp objects such as broken glass.
  • Identifies opportunities and recommends methods to improve service, work processes and financial performance. Assist in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives. Assists co-workers in the completion of tasks and assignments to ensure continuity of service. Orients new co-workers and actively supports teamwork throughout the school system.
  • Performs any additional duties assigned by superintendent and/or evaluator.
