What is a prototype engineer?

A Prototype Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and tests early versions of products or components to evaluate their functionality and performance before mass production. They collaborate with designers, engineers, and product managers to turn concepts into tangible prototypes, using a variety of fabrication techniques and materials. Their work helps identify potential design improvements, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that the final product meets technical and user requirements.

What does a prototype engineer do?

A prototype engineer is part of a product development team that designs prototypes for new kinds of industrial products. Many companies employ design engineers to perform numerous technical duties, such as drawing up schematics and blueprints, overseeing the production of prototypes, and testing those prototypes to decide whether they should enter mass production. The career requires significant educational qualifications and a variety of skills and experience. You should have an engineering degree in the field you wish to enter, strong analytical problem-solving, and the ability to work as part of a large team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prototype engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prototype Engineer, you need strong skills in mechanical or electrical engineering, rapid prototyping techniques, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printing technologies, and hands-on fabrication tools is typically required, along with knowledge of prototyping standards. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project requirements. These abilities enable successful design iteration, effective collaboration, and efficient transition from concept to functional prototype.

What are some common challenges prototype engineers face when transitioning designs from concept to functional prototypes?

Prototype Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting incomplete or evolving design specifications, sourcing unconventional materials, and working within tight deadlines. Close collaboration with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams is essential to resolve technical issues quickly and ensure the prototype aligns with the intended functionality. Flexibility and creative problem-solving are key, as unexpected obstacles frequently arise during the rapid iteration and testing phases.

Our brands include Addictive Desert Designs, DV8 Offroad, Flatline Van Co., and Rago Fabrication. We support a collaborative environment and value open participation from individuals with different ideas, experiences, and perspectives.
Are you ready to be part of our future?
Ever stared at a Raptor, Bronco, or Ram TRX and thought, "I could make that look even better"? So do we - every single day.
HPAG builds premium, made-in-America bumpers and accessories that flow with a vehicle's bodylines, deliver aggressive styling, and keep every OEM function intact. From the Bronco Bomber to the Raptor Stealth Fighter, our products live on some of the toughest trucks on the trail - and it all starts in CAD.
We're looking for a CAD Designer Lead to turn bold ideas into manufacturable reality at our Chandler, Arizona facility. This role is less about hard core engineering and more focused on a quality product with great aesthetic look and style combined with enough structure to last for a lifetime once installed. If you enjoy the design side over the hard core engineering side this may be a great fit for you. We are making the next generation of aftermarket accessories for new trucks and other off-road vehicles, come be part of that creative team!
Why You'll Love This Role
  • You'll own the R&D design process end-to-end - creating, refining, and improving products built for the off-road community.
  • Your designs won't sit on a shelf. They get laser-cut, bent, welded, and bolted onto real trucks.
  • You'll work hands-on with a prototype engineering team that takes parts from screen to physical reality.
  • Made in the USA, built for the elite - you'll be part of a team obsessed with the details that matter.
What You'll Do
  • Create CAD models in SolidWorks daily - from templates, physical parts, or your own designs.
  • Build complex 3D sheet metal and tubular assemblies ready for manufacturing.
  • Process 3D scans and create scanned mesh models of vehicle data to drive new product development.
  • Partner with the prototype engineering team to move new products into automation and production.
  • Take open instructions on part and assembly revisions and run with them.
What You Bring - Position Requirements
  • Strong SolidWorks skills - you can manage complex assemblies and create sheet metal and tubular parts with confidence.
  • 3 years - Experience designing similar automotive or aerospace products
  • Experience with tooling and fixtures, and the know-how to bring a 3D model into physical reality.
  • Working knowledge of machine work and processes for final parts.
  • Experience collaborating with an engineering team and producing accurate, measured drawings.
  • A creative mindset paired with the discipline to translate ideas into clean, manufacturable assemblies.
  • Self-motivated and assertive, comfortable in a fast-paced shop where priorities shift quickly.
  • A team-first attitude - you put the success of the team above your own interests.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
Pay & Benefits
  • Starting at $80,000.00 is negotiable depending on experience.
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Paid time off.
  • Employee discount on the gear you'll help create.
  • Employee referral program.
Schedule & Location
  • Full-time, 8-hour day shift, Monday through Friday.
  • On-site at our Chandler, AZ facility.
