What is the difference between Prototype Engineer Intern vs Mechanical Engineering Intern?

AspectPrototype Engineer InternMechanical Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsEnrolled in Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering programsEnrolled in Mechanical Engineering or related programs
Work EnvironmentHands-on prototyping, product development labs, manufacturing settingsDesign, analysis, testing in labs or office settings
Industry UsageProduct design, hardware development, R&D teamsDesign, analysis, manufacturing, and testing teams

Prototype Engineer Interns focus on creating and testing physical prototypes, often working closely with hardware and manufacturing teams. Mechanical Engineering Interns typically engage in design, analysis, and testing of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering knowledge and may overlap in industry settings, Prototype Engineer Interns are more hands-on with prototyping processes, whereas Mechanical Engineering Interns may have broader design responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Prototype Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prototype Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in engineering fundamentals, hands-on fabrication skills, and experience with prototyping processes, typically supported by coursework in mechanical or electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), 3D printing technology, and basic laboratory or workshop tools is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative and fast-paced development environments. These skills are crucial for efficiently transforming design concepts into functional prototypes that support innovation and product development.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Prototype Engineer Intern expect during their internship?

As a Prototype Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on hands-on projects that may include designing, building, and testing prototypes for new products or features. You'll likely collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and sometimes manufacturing teams to bring concepts to life quickly. Typical responsibilities include CAD modeling, assembling physical prototypes, running experiments, and documenting results. This role often requires adaptability and problem-solving, as you'll need to iterate designs based on feedback and test outcomes. It's a great opportunity to gain experience with rapid prototyping tools and processes while working in a collaborative, innovative environment.

What does a Prototype Engineer Intern do?

A Prototype Engineer Intern assists in designing, building, and testing early versions of products or components. They work closely with engineering teams to turn concepts into physical models, often using tools like 3D printers, CNC machines, and hand tools. Their role may involve troubleshooting, documenting results, and suggesting improvements based on testing. This internship provides hands-on experience in the product development process and helps interns develop practical engineering skills.

Job description

JAGGAER provides an intelligent Source-to-Pay and Supplier Collaboration Platform that empowers organizations to manage and automate complex processes while enabling a highly resilient, responsible, and integrated supplier base. With 30 years of expertise, we specialize in solving complex procurement and supply chain challenges across various industries.
Our 1,300+ global employees are obsessed with ensuring customers get full value from our products - ultimately enhancing and transforming their businesses. For more information, visit www.jaggaer.com

JAGGAER is a proven industry leader of comprehensive sourcing & procurement solutions. Our SaaS-based, source-to-settle solution provides unparalleled visibility, insights and recommendations to procurement leaders and suppliers. The result is a fluid supply chain driven by powerful spend analysis, comprehensive contract management and efficient accounts payable solutions.

We are seeking AI/ML Interns to join our AI & Innovation team. Our team is building the next generation of intelligent procurement solutions, leveraging Agentic AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), large language models (LLMs), and other cutting-edge AI technologies to transform how organizations manage sourcing and spend.

As an intern, you will contribute to real AI projects from day one—designing and building RAG pipelines, prototyping agentic workflows, and integrating LLMs into our product ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with our engineering and data science teams to bring AI-driven features from concept to production.

As an AI/ML Intern, we expect you will learn about JAGGAER’s business, our customers, and our technology while gaining hands-on experience with state-of-the-art AI tools and frameworks. You will have access to experienced engineers and researchers who are eager to mentor you and are equally interested in the fresh perspectives you bring. You will start working on meaningful AI projects right away.

Role Responsibilities

· Design, develop, and optimize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines using vector databases, embedding models, and LLM APIs.

· Prototype and build agentic AI workflows that autonomously plan, reason, and execute multi-step tasks within our procurement platform.

· Evaluate and benchmark LLMs and AI models for accuracy, latency, cost, and relevance across different procurement use cases.

· Develop and refine prompt engineering strategies to improve the quality and reliability of LLM-generated outputs.

· Build data ingestion and preprocessing pipelines to prepare enterprise documents for embedding and retrieval.

· Research emerging AI techniques (e.g., function calling, multi-agent orchestration, fine-tuning) and present findings to the team.

· Contribute to our library of reusable AI components, tools, and integration patterns.

· Participate in demos and feedback sessions to validate AI features with internal stakeholders and customers.

· Document AI experiments, model performance metrics, and architectural decisions to build our team’s knowledge base.

What You Will Bring

· Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or a related field.

· Strong programming skills in Python; familiarity with AI/ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face Transformers, or scikit-learn.

· Exposure to LLM frameworks and tools (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, OpenAI API, or similar) is a plus.

· Foundational understanding of machine learning concepts, NLP, and deep learning architectures.

· Familiarity with vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, ChromaDB, FAISS) and embedding techniques is a plus.

· Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills with a genuine curiosity about emerging AI technologies.

· Relevant coursework or personal projects in AI, machine learning, or NLP are highly valued.

Success in this Position

· Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and a passion for applying AI to real-world procurement challenges

· Collaborates effectively with engineers, data scientists, and product managers to deliver AI-powered solutions

· Embraces rapid prototyping and iterative experimentation—comfortable with ambiguity and evolving AI technologies

· Balances research exploration with a bias toward shipping—turning AI experiments into production-ready features

· Takes initiative in learning new AI tools, techniques, and frameworks with minimal direction

· Brings fresh ideas on how AI can improve our products, processes, and customer outcomes

· Finds genuine excitement in pushing the boundaries of what AI can do for enterprise procurement
