What does a prototype development engineer do?

A Prototype Development Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and testing prototypes of new products or components. They collaborate with product designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams to turn concepts into functional models. Their work involves using CAD software, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues that arise during development. The goal is to evaluate and refine ideas before mass production to ensure the product meets performance, safety, and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prototype development engineer?

To thrive as a Prototype Development Engineer, you need strong engineering fundamentals, hands-on fabrication skills, and a degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering fields. Familiarity with CAD software, rapid prototyping tools like 3D printers, and experience with testing equipment are typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure prototypes are innovative, functional, and aligned with project goals, driving successful development cycles.

What are some common challenges prototype development engineers face when transitioning from concept to functional prototype?

Prototype Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as translating abstract design concepts into practical, manufacturable prototypes within tight timelines. Balancing innovative ideas with material limitations, cost constraints, and technical feasibility can be demanding. Additionally, effective collaboration with design, manufacturing, and testing teams is crucial to quickly resolve unforeseen issues and iterate on solutions. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear communication helps overcome these obstacles and ensures successful prototype delivery.

What is the difference between Prototype Development Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPrototype Development EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusCreating physical prototypes to test concepts and functionalitiesDesigning detailed mechanical components and systems
Skills & CertificationsPrototyping tools, CAD, materials knowledge, engineering fundamentalsCAD, mechanical design, analysis, certifications like EIT or PE
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, prototyping workshops, manufacturing settingsDesign offices, CAD labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageProduct development, R&D, manufacturingProduct design, mechanical systems, engineering firms

While both roles involve engineering skills and CAD proficiency, Prototype Development Engineers focus on building and testing physical models to validate concepts, whereas Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on creating detailed mechanical designs and specifications. The roles often collaborate during product development cycles but serve different stages of the process.

If you are ready to be part of a high-energy, solutions-driven team where your work makes an impact, Maverick Power is the place for you.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive Salary + Bonus Potential!
  • Paid Time Off, 401K Matching, Medical, Dental, and Vision Benefits!
  • High-growth organization with advancement opportunities!
  • Diverse, Collaborative, & Fun Work Environment!

About the Role:

Maverick Power is seeking a motivated engineer to own and grow the knowledgebase behind our quote-to-production system, MP Direct. This role is responsible for building and maintaining the product configuration logic that drives quoting accuracy today, and for helping shape where that system goes next, including AI-enabled quotation automation, an LLM layer on top of MP Direct, and automated single-line diagram (SLD) and spec reading. A core focus of the role is extending MP Direct's reach across the full quote-to-cash process, most importantly driving bills of material directly into our ERP system (Epicor). This is a cross-functional role ideal for someone who is technically inclined but business-aware, and excited about applying engineering thinking to product configuration, automation, and internal efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Knowledgebase Development (MP Direct)
    • Own and continuously expand the MP Direct knowledgebase, including product modules, configuration rules, options, and constraints
    • Serve as the primary point of contact with the software team on MP Direct functionality, enhancements, and issue resolution
    • Coordinate with R&D, PLM, and the Software team to capture new product introductions and engineering changes in the knowledgebase on release
    • Write software requirements documents (SRDs) for new MP Direct features and enhancements, and test features against those requirements to confirm they work as expected before release
    • Ensure module logic aligns with engineering designs and electrical standards (UL, ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NEC)
    • Extend MP Direct across the full quote-to-cash process, with a primary focus on driving accurate bills of material directly into our ERP system (Epicor)
    • Troubleshoot and resolve knowledgebase errors and quoting discrepancies flagged by sales or engineering, and maintain version control and change documentation for all updates
  • AI & Process Automation
    • Identify manual steps across the quote-to-cash process (quoting, BOM generation, order entry into Epicor, documentation) that are candidates for automation
    • Evaluate and prototype AI tools (e.g., Claude, Maverick's internal P1-AI platform, Power Automate) to reduce repetitive tasks and support an eventual LLM layer on top of MP Direct for quotation automation
    • Help build and test AI-enabled workflows for BOM generation, pricing, and compliance checks
    • Support development of an automated single-line diagram (SLD) and spec reader to accelerate quoting and reduce manual takeoff
    • Help automate the flow of bills of material from MP Direct into Epicor to remove manual re-entry and reduce order errors

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, another technical field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong written communication and technical documentation skills
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and comfort working in rule-based/logic-driven systems
  • Interest in AI and digital tools such as Claude, large language models (LLMs), Microsoft Power Automate, and Maverick's internal P1-AI platform
  • Must comply with all company policies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with electrical switchgear (UL 891, 1558, 1008, 67, 508A, ANSI/IEEE C37.20.X, NEC)
  • Exposure to product configurators and ERP systems, ideally Epicor

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to twenty-five pounds at times.

Work Environment:
May work in various settings at the Maverick Power facilities, in offices, in multiple shops, and in commercial buildings. Maintaining the same position or posture while performing tasks and sitting for prolonged periods. The above-noted job description is not intended to describe, in detail, the multitude of tasks that may be assigned but rather to give the applicant a general sense of the responsibilities and expectations of this position.
