What does a prototype development engineer do?

A Prototype Development Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and testing prototypes of new products or components. They collaborate with product designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams to turn concepts into functional models. Their work involves using CAD software, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues that arise during development. The goal is to evaluate and refine ideas before mass production to ensure the product meets performance, safety, and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prototype development engineer?

To thrive as a Prototype Development Engineer, you need strong engineering fundamentals, hands-on fabrication skills, and a degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering fields. Familiarity with CAD software, rapid prototyping tools like 3D printers, and experience with testing equipment are typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure prototypes are innovative, functional, and aligned with project goals, driving successful development cycles.

What are some common challenges prototype development engineers face when transitioning from concept to functional prototype?

Prototype Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as translating abstract design concepts into practical, manufacturable prototypes within tight timelines. Balancing innovative ideas with material limitations, cost constraints, and technical feasibility can be demanding. Additionally, effective collaboration with design, manufacturing, and testing teams is crucial to quickly resolve unforeseen issues and iterate on solutions. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear communication helps overcome these obstacles and ensures successful prototype delivery.

What is the difference between Prototype Development Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPrototype Development EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusCreating physical prototypes to test concepts and functionalitiesDesigning detailed mechanical components and systems
Skills & CertificationsPrototyping tools, CAD, materials knowledge, engineering fundamentalsCAD, mechanical design, analysis, certifications like EIT or PE
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, prototyping workshops, manufacturing settingsDesign offices, CAD labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageProduct development, R&D, manufacturingProduct design, mechanical systems, engineering firms

While both roles involve engineering skills and CAD proficiency, Prototype Development Engineers focus on building and testing physical models to validate concepts, whereas Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on creating detailed mechanical designs and specifications. The roles often collaborate during product development cycles but serve different stages of the process.

Job description

Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money- we're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career-we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.

About the Role:

Remitly is building the Remitly Global Card, a card and wallet that give customers a single, trusted place to hold, spend, and move their money, launching across multiple geographies. As a Staff Engineer on the Global Card team, you will set the technical direction for the product end to end: the screens customers see, the APIs behind them, and the services that issue cards, hold balances, and move money. You will take the lead on large, cross-team initiatives, serve as a senior technical voice across product and engineering, and hold the correctness and trust bar a regulated money product demands, all on a team that moves fast and builds with AI in the loop every day, where agentic coding tools are part of how we work, not a side experiment. You will report to the Engineering Director and work in a hybrid capacity from our Arlington, VA office.

You Will:
  • Own the technical direction and architecture of the Global Card product, from customer-facing web and mobile surfaces to the services and integrations that issue cards, hold balances, and move money, taking the lead on large, cross-team initiatives.

  • Design and build for scale, solving ambiguous and complex problems using full stack technologies (React, GraphQL, Java/Kotlin) in a regulated environment where reliability, security, and compliance shape engineering decisions.

  • Partner with product, design, analytics, and engineering leaders to shape the Card roadmap, advise domain-level planning, and lead design reviews.

  • Make AI-native engineering a durable practice on the team: set the bar, own the team's automation as a maintained portfolio, and extend those standards to teams you work closely with.

  • Evolve engineering excellence standards (reliability, observability, security, quality) and resolve the long-standing problems that limit scale before they become bottlenecks.

  • Raise the engineering bar by mentoring engineers at multiple levels through design and code reviews, and expanding team knowledge and skills.

  • Stay hands-on across TypeScript, React/React Native, Java/Kotlin, and Go, and set the standard in code review.

You Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, with experience building and operating systems end-to-end.

  • 4+ years of hands-on React or React Native development experience, and experience building customer-facing experiences at product scale.

  • Proficiency in TypeScript/React (or similar) plus a backend language (Node.js, Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python).

  • Experience leading team and cross-team design reviews, and designing for extensibility.

  • Experience using AI throughout the software development lifecycle, from authoring agents to drafting technical specs and prototypes, and helping others apply it well.

  • Experience with distributed, large-scale systems and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

  • Bonus: Experience in FinTech, lending, or payments. industry where reliability, security, and compliance shape engineering decisions.
