Prototype Development Engineer information

What does a prototype development engineer do?

A Prototype Development Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and testing prototypes of new products or components. They collaborate with product designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams to turn concepts into functional models. Their work involves using CAD software, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues that arise during development. The goal is to evaluate and refine ideas before mass production to ensure the product meets performance, safety, and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prototype development engineer?

To thrive as a Prototype Development Engineer, you need strong engineering fundamentals, hands-on fabrication skills, and a degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering fields. Familiarity with CAD software, rapid prototyping tools like 3D printers, and experience with testing equipment are typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure prototypes are innovative, functional, and aligned with project goals, driving successful development cycles.

What are some common challenges prototype development engineers face when transitioning from concept to functional prototype?

Prototype Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as translating abstract design concepts into practical, manufacturable prototypes within tight timelines. Balancing innovative ideas with material limitations, cost constraints, and technical feasibility can be demanding. Additionally, effective collaboration with design, manufacturing, and testing teams is crucial to quickly resolve unforeseen issues and iterate on solutions. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear communication helps overcome these obstacles and ensures successful prototype delivery.

What is the difference between Prototype Development Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPrototype Development EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusCreating physical prototypes to test concepts and functionalitiesDesigning detailed mechanical components and systems
Skills & CertificationsPrototyping tools, CAD, materials knowledge, engineering fundamentalsCAD, mechanical design, analysis, certifications like EIT or PE
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, prototyping workshops, manufacturing settingsDesign offices, CAD labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageProduct development, R&D, manufacturingProduct design, mechanical systems, engineering firms

While both roles involve engineering skills and CAD proficiency, Prototype Development Engineers focus on building and testing physical models to validate concepts, whereas Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on creating detailed mechanical designs and specifications. The roles often collaborate during product development cycles but serve different stages of the process.

Job description

Job Description

This is a foundational opportunity to deliver AI-driven operational transformation within RBC Operations Technology, with a strong emphasis on process automation and intelligent workflow design. You will join a team that thinks progressively and works collaboratively, shaping the technical direction of AI across the bank.

As a Product Engineer, you will bridge product strategy and engineering excellence, influencing how AI is built, deployed, and scaled to transform banking operations through sophisticated workflow automation. You will own the solution design and drive the technical strategy for intelligent agentic systems and automated workflows, improving operational efficiency and enhancing employee experiences within the CODI program. This hybrid role combines software development, AI integration, and deep workflow expertise to build reliable, scalable, and user-centric AI applications that drive next-generation operational efficiency.

What will you do ?
  • Solution Design: Translate product and business requirements into comprehensive technical solutions, mapping product vision to system architecture, technology stack decisions, and design patterns for operational AI use cases and automated workflows. Work with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to understand requirements, propose technical approaches, and validate feasibility

  • AI Agent & Portal Technical Ownership: Own the technical vision for intelligent agentic systems and the portal infrastructure that enables human interaction with agent-integrated workflows; drive decisions around RAG systems, prompt engineering, agent orchestration, and modern web development patterns (React, micro frontends)

  • User-Centric Problem Solving: Think deeply about user problems and operational workflows; help define solutions rather than simply implementing requirements. Analyze user feedback and usage data to identify improvements and inform design decisions

  • Development Support & Guidance: Provide technical direction and mentorship to development teams; ensure solutions align with defined technical patterns, quality standards, and architectural governance

  • Enterprise Knowledge Systems: Act as a knowledge engineer for enterprise knowledge, documentation, and retrieval systems that power AI assistants and search capabilities

  • Solution Validation & Iteration: Evaluate prototyping outcomes, analyze usage patterns and operational behavior, identify technical risks and opportunities, and iterate on designs based on development insights and production learnings

  • Cost & Performance Analysis: Conduct cost analysis across platforms and technical approaches; suggest improvements based on user behavior, operational efficiency, and enterprise constraints

  • Technical Governance Collaboration: Partner with Solution Architects on governance and platform-level design; ensure application designs comply with enterprise standards while solving specific operational use case challenges

  • Rapid Prototyping: Build working prototypes that demonstrate future state solutions to stakeholders and users. Prototype and ship features quickly to validate concepts and gather feedback; balance innovation with production-grade reliability

What do you need to succeed ?Must have:
  • Ability to design end-to-end technical solutions that balance business requirements, technical feasibility, and operational constraints.

  • Fluency in Python, JavaScript, and/or Java.

  • Strong hands-on experience with AI agent development (LLM integration, prompt engineering, agentic workflows) specifically in orchestrating complex operational processes.

  • Proven experience with workflow automation platforms such as Camunda, Pega, or similar BPM/RPA tools, including design, implementation, and integration patterns.

  • Track record of rapid prototyping and validation, moving from concept to working solutions quickly.

Nice-to-have:
  • 5+ years of modern full-stack web application development experience (React, API design, scalable systems)

  • Understanding of enterprise banking operations and operational workflows.

  • Experience with responsible AI, governance frameworks, and AI quality/monitoring.

  • Background as a knowledge engineer or experience building enterprise knowledge and retrieval systems.

Whatโ€™s in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses and flexible benefits

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities

  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact

  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team

  • Access to a variety of job opportunities across business and geographies
