Job Description:

Software Engineer 3 - BGP, Routing Protocols (Hybrid)

Location: Westford, MA

Join HPE Networking and help shape the future of enterprise networking. We're looking for a highly experienced Software Engineer to join our Routing Switching Protocols Intelligence (RSPI) team. In this role, you'll design and develop next-generation routing software, with a strong focus on BGP and data center networking technologies, while building highly scalable solutions for HPE's global customer base.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and enhance routing protocol software with a focus on BGP.

  • Write high-quality, maintainable code in C/C++, including design, implementation, unit testing, and code reviews.

  • Troubleshoot complex networking issues and reproduce customer environments to resolve challenging problems.

  • Partner with Quality Engineering to improve automation, test coverage, and product quality.

  • Develop proof-of-concept (PoC) solutions that address real-world customer requirements.

  • Collaborate with global engineering teams to influence architecture and technical direction.

  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies to improve networking performance, scalability, and reliability.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience developing networking or systems software.

  • Expert-level programming skills in C/C++, including strong knowledge of data structures and multithreaded programming.

  • Deep understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking and routing protocols.

  • Hands-on experience with technologies such as:

    • BGP

    • OSPF

    • IS-IS

    • EVPN-VXLAN

    • MPLS

    • TCP/IP

  • Experience with data center networking, including IP Fabric, VXLAN, or CLOS architectures.

  • Experience with scripting or automation using Python, Go, Rust, or similar languages.

  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across global engineering teams.
