Role

As the Fire Protection Manager, you will lead and oversee the Fire Protection team, providing both technical and operational leadership across a wide range of projects.


You will play a key role in managing team performance, project execution, client relationships, business development, and the continued growth of the department. This position is ideal for a senior fire protection professional who combines strong technical expertise with leadership capability, business acumen, and a passion for mentoring high-performing teams.


You will work closely with Principals, senior leadership, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure projects are delivered successfully, efficiently, and to the high standard our clients expect from HIDI.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Fire Protection team
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to team members
  • Support employee development, engagement, and performance management
  • Participate in recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and team planning initiatives
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment
  • Monitor team utilization, scheduling, and workload distribution

Project & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the design, coordination, and delivery of fire protection and life safety systems
  • Review, approve, and seal Fire Protection drawings and technical documents
  • Prepare and review technical reports, specifications, calculations, and system layouts
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and oversee system design coordination
  • Ensure designs comply with OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, and applicable codes and standards
  • Coordinate with Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural, Structural, and Interior Design teams
  • Attend client meetings, design coordination meetings, and site reviews as required
  • Oversee quality control processes and ensure adherence to HIDI design standards
  • Support project teams with technical problem-solving and issue resolution
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful execution

Business Development & Client Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and industry partners
  • Support business development initiatives and help identify new opportunities
  • Participate in proposal preparation, fee development, and project planning
  • Work collaboratively with leadership to support strategic growth initiatives
  • Represent HIDI at networking, industry, and client events

Operational & Strategic Contributions

  • Contribute to departmental planning, budgeting, and resource forecasting
  • Participate in management meetings and strategic planning discussions
  • Help improve internal processes, workflows, and operational efficiencies
  • Support cross-disciplinary coordination and communication across offices
  • Monitor team performance metrics and support continuous improvement initiatives

Skills & Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, in good standing
  • Minimum 10 years of experience within the engineering consulting industry
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership or management experience
  • Strong experience designing and coordinating fire protection systems
  • Strong understanding of OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, and applicable industry standards
  • Excellent technical, organizational, and project management skills
  • Proven ability to lead teams, mentor staff, and manage client relationships
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Experience reviewing multidisciplinary construction documents
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and general engineering software/tools
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced consulting environment
