Props Intern information

What is a props intern?

Props Interns are entry-level team members in theater, film, or television productions who assist the props department with sourcing, creating, maintaining, and organizing props. They work under the supervision of a props master or designer and gain hands-on experience in prop management, fabrication, and backstage operations. This role is often part of an educational or early career development program, providing valuable industry exposure and practical skills for those interested in a career in technical theater or production design.

What are some typical challenges a props intern might face when working on a fast-paced production?

As a Props Intern, you may encounter challenges such as managing multiple prop requests on tight deadlines and adapting to last-minute changes from directors or designers. Staying organized and communicating clearly with the props master and other departments is crucial, especially when sourcing or fabricating props under time constraints. Flexibility, resourcefulness, and attention to detail will help you handle these pressures effectively while ensuring the props contribute seamlessly to the production's vision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a props intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Props Intern, you need a strong foundation in theatre production, basic crafting skills, and a keen attention to detail, often supported by coursework or experience in technical theatre. Familiarity with hand and power tools, materials sourcing, and safety protocols is typically required, and knowledge of inventory management systems is helpful. Creativity, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively under tight deadlines are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring that props are built, maintained, and delivered efficiently to support the overall success of a production.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn on set
