What is proprietary trading?

A proprietary trading (prop trading) job involves trading financial instruments, such as stocks, options, futures, or currencies, using a firm's own capital instead of client funds. Traders aim to generate profits for the firm by leveraging strategies like arbitrage, high-frequency trading, or market-making. Prop traders often receive a share of the profits they generate but may also face risk limits set by the firm. Successful traders need strong analytical skills, risk management abilities, and market expertise. Many firms provide capital, training, and technology to help traders succeed.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in proprietary trading?

A typical day in Proprietary Trading involves monitoring financial markets, analyzing data to identify trading opportunities, executing trades, and managing existing positions throughout the trading session. You’ll frequently use analytical tools and trading software to track market movements and adjust strategies in real time. Collaboration with other traders, risk managers, and sometimes quantitative analysts is common, fostering a team-oriented approach to managing risk and sharing insights. It's a dynamic role with fast-paced decision-making, where success is measured by both individual and team performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in proprietary trading?

To thrive in Proprietary Trading, you need advanced quantitative and analytical abilities, a thorough understanding of financial markets, and often a strong academic background in math, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, algorithmic trading systems, and financial modeling software, as well as relevant certifications like CFA or FRM, are highly valuable. Excellent risk management, quick decision-making, and adaptability are essential soft skills for this high-pressure environment. These skills are vital to identify market opportunities, manage positions effectively, and perform successfully under fast-paced, competitive conditions.

How to become a proprietary trader?

To become a proprietary trader, individuals typically need a strong understanding of financial markets, trading strategies, and risk management. Many traders start by gaining experience through internships or trading firms, and some pursue certifications like the Series 7 or Series 63. Developing skills in technical analysis, using trading platforms, and maintaining discipline are essential for success in proprietary trading.

What does a proprietary trading do?

A proprietary trader, or prop trader, uses a firm's capital to buy and sell financial instruments such as stocks, bonds, or derivatives to generate profits. They analyze market data, develop trading strategies, and often work with advanced trading platforms and risk management tools. Their goal is to maximize returns for the firm through active trading activities.

Job description

RWE Supply & Trading Asia-Pacific Pte. Ltd.

Start date: September 2027

Location: Singapore

Application Deadline: 16 August 2026

From here, choose a whole world of experience.

Join our two-year Commercial Graduate Programme and take part in four six-month rotations, gaining broad exposure across key business areas. Your journey starts with an initial rotation in Singapore, followed by the opportunity to complete further rotations across the APAC region or internationally, including locations such as Germany, USA and the UK. After the programme, you'll be well positioned to explore permanent opportunities across our global locations and continue developing your career within our corporate functions.

The contribution you'll make

Right from the start, you'll help us continue our expansion into new markets and locations. You'll gain an in-depth understanding of our global business operations and have the chance to connect the dots across the value chain. Your daily tasks and involvement in significant projects will span various areas, including:

  • Proprietary trading of energy commodities (power, coal, gas, oil, LNG, metals, carbon)
  • Freight Trading & Operations (Shipping)
  • Commercial Asset Optimisation
  • Sales & Origination
  • Commercial Analysis
  • Analytical functions such as Structuring & Valuation, Risk Management or Data Science, and more

Your profile

Are you eager to learn and grow alongside experienced experts? Excited by the opportunity to explore new markets with a commercial business that is expanding globally? We're looking for ambitious, curious and analytical graduates who are motivated to make an impact while learning across different corporate functions.

  • A degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) in a highly analytical and numerical subject, such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Maritime, Economics or Data Sciences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in fluent English; proficiency in an Asian language would be an advantage.
  • Strong IT capability, with programming skills such as Python or another language considered an advantage.
  • Curiosity, proactivity and a strong willingness to learn, take ownership and deliver high-quality work with reliability and integrity.
  • Commercial aptitude and an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled tools and a willingness to apply them responsibly for research, summarisation, drafting, analysis and process improvement, in line with RWE policies and responsible-use principles.
  • Flexibility and mobility to work across teams and, where required, international locations, combined with an inclusive mindset.

From here, you'll have a community of support.

You'll become part of a vibrant and diverse early careers network that extends far beyond the office you're in. You'll also have a buddy and a mentor to support you and plenty of training courses and seminars to build your knowledge. And your career path will be yours to shape, throughout the programme and beyond.

While you're on our graduate journey, we're committed to providing you with a range of opportunities to grow and develop your skills. Alongside job rotations and technical training, you'll be provided with comprehensive behavioural skills training with our expert partner, Cappfinity. This will enable you to harness your strengths from day one and identify new ways to utilise the key Skills That Build Skills. This will support you to reach your potential and goals, shaping your career path. The behavioural skills training is immersive, including interactive sessions where you can learn from our facilitators and your own peers, and self-led elements to support your application of learning back in your day-to-day role.

What we can offer

We aim to promote a workplace which allows people to perform at their best. So, as well as ensuring you're rewarded for your efforts, we also have a variety of initiatives in place to help create a healthy workspace and support for your well-being:

  • Competitive salary plus annual discretionary bonus.
  • Company pension and discounted employee share scheme.
  • 25 days' annual leave, plus public holidays.
  • International rotations to the UK, Singapore, the US or potentially further afield, with financial assistance for eligible assignments.
  • Flexible benefits, including fitness membership support.
  • Modern office environment, up-to-date IT and access to collaborative tools.
  • Open and diverse company culture, with clubs, societies and employee networks including the Diversity Ambassador Programme.
