Job description

Business Personal Property Tax Associate
Modern Tax Group, LLC | Dallas, TX | Full-Time | Hybrid
The Role
Every asset a business owns — equipment, inventory, machinery, furniture — gets a tax bill attached to it. Your job is making sure that bill is fair.
You'll work alongside a team of consultants building custom tax savings strategies for clients, and you'll own real pieces of that work yourself: preparing filings, digging into assessments, and sitting across the table from appraisers to argue what is in your client’s best interest. This isn't a behind-the-scenes role — you'll be talking to clients regularly, and over time you become the person they trust with their tax strategy, not just the person who files the paperwork. It's part analyst, part advocate, part relationship manager — if you like work where the details matter and the outcome is a client paying less than they would have without you, this is that job.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Preparing the filings
  • Prepare annual Business Personal Property renditions, Freeport applications and any other applicable required form throughout the U.S.
  • Reconcile clients' fixed assets and financials to make sure what's being filed is accurate
Fighting for fair valuations
  • Review assessments and file appeals when a valuation is off
  • Negotiate valuations directly with local appraisers
  • Build the supporting documentation that makes your case actually stick in a hearing
Closing the loop
  • Prepare annual tax budgets by validating jurisdictions per property and confirming tax rates are accurate, so clients can track any changes needed to their accruals
  • Maintain client data in the property tax software database
Owning the client relationship
  • Serve as a regular, day-to-day point of contact for a portfolio of clients — not just at filing deadlines; you’ll be ahead of the curve, building relationships with proactive outreach throughout the year
  • Build client trust through service and performance: understanding each client's business well enough to spot savings opportunities before they ask
  • Retain client relationships with a focus on minimizing their property tax liabilities year over year
  • Respond to client inquiries and to requests from taxing authorities — you're often the first voice a client or an appraiser hears
  • Communicate proactively with clients on filing status, assessment changes, and appeal outcomes, so they never have to wonder where things stand
  • Represent the client's interests directly in conversations with appraisers, adjusting your approach as each relationship and each case calls for it
What Makes You a Good Fit
  • You manage your time well and don't let deadlines sneak up on you
  • You're analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable juggling multiple client files at once
  • You approach problems with genuine critical thinking, not just checklist-following
  • You're self-motivated — you don't need someone standing over you to stay on track
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and you process and execute instructions in the same manner
  • You can flex your schedule for overtime and weekends when a deadline calls for it
Education amp; Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Real Estate, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or Business Administration
  • Licensed Texas Property Tax Consultant by the Texas Board of Licensing and Regulation (or obtained shortly after hire date)
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in property tax consulting or a related field
  • Comprehensive knowledge of property tax laws, valuation methodologies, and appeal processes
  • Experience with property tax software (PTMS, OneSource, SigerTax)
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Outlook, Word)
Benefits Highlights
  • Competitive salary
  • 401(k) retirement plan, 100% match up to 6%
  • Medical, Dental and Life Insurance
  • Paid holidays and unlimited paid time off
  • Continued learning opportunities
  • Hybrid work schedule
