What is a property room?

A Property Room is a secure area within a police department where evidence, found property, and items seized during investigations are stored. It is managed by specialized personnel who are responsible for logging, safeguarding, and tracking these items to ensure proper chain of custody. The Property Room plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of evidence for court proceedings and returning property to rightful owners when appropriate. Strict procedures and documentation are required to ensure accountability and prevent loss or tampering. The organization and operation of Property Rooms are often governed by departmental policies and local laws.

These skills ensure accurate tracking, legal compliance, and the safe, secure management of property and evidence.

Property Room staff often handle a large volume of items that must be accurately catalogued, securely stored, and readily accessible for legal or investigative purposes.
