The position is located in Sells, AZ.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, provides a structured culturally relevant program in a family style setting, to assist families to develop a wellness family relationship with their elder(s), interpersonal and problem reduction skills, to prevent further elder abuse and neglect.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assesses the needs of the elderly and families referred for services.
• Assists in developing a treatment plan specific to the needs of elder(s) and their families.
• Functions as an advocate for families in need of services according to program guidelines, policies and procedures.
• Provides family counseling and training according to treatment plans.
• Instructs families in the stages of elder norms, both physical and emotional factors, methods of nonphysical behavior management, nutritional needs, and techniques in providing support for their elder.
• Teaches families how to establish positive relationship with their elder, how to manage stress, and how to meet their own emotional needs in a manner that is not destructive to their elder.
• Identifies community resources for families to assist them in developing and maintaining learned skills.
• Provides instruction to elders and families on methods of personal problem solving.
• Facilitates parenting classes to provide parents with resources, knowledge, and awareness of parenting skills and techniques.
• Conducts home visits to observe the home environment, conduct one-on-one sessions, provides resources and up-coming events.
• Provides monthly reports to the immediate supervisor.
• Collaborates with other communities, districts, law enforcement, school personnel and other entities of the Tohono O'odham Nation regarding client or program information.
• Travels within assigned areas, as needed.
• Maintains professional knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
• Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of Tohono O'odham traditions, language, history and culture.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
• Knowledge of department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham Nation's Adult Protective Ordinance.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of social service work.
• Knowledge of community resources available to individuals and families.
• Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
• Skill in operating a computer and basic office equipment.
• Skill in assessing situations and providing appropriate remedies.
• Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
• Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
• Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
• Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate's Degree in Social Work or closely related field, and four years' work experience in providing counseling services to elders and their families, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

• Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
• Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
• May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
• If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
• Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
