Job description

The Firefighter Medic must be ready to promptly respond to emergency situations involving fire, perform fire suppression techniques, and provide rescue and emergency medical services. The Firefighter Medic is responsible to perform to the highest levels of professionalism to ensure protection of lives and property within the Ocean Reef Community as well as within our adjoining response areas.
SPECIFIC DUTIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO)
  • Performs fire prevention and suppression activities in accordance with policies and procedures as directed by their supervisor and chain of command.
  • Performs vehicle extrication and other rescue activities in accordance with policies and procedures as directed by their supervisor and chain of command.
  • Administers appropriate patient care in emergency situations based upon department protocols and procedures.
  • Assists with cleaning and maintenance of fire station and firefighting/EMS equipment.
  • Participates in required training.
  • Ensures compliance with (ORCA) policies and procedures, standard operating procedures, and direction from Public Safety management.
  • Submits accurate and complete written reports as required by standard operating procedures and department directives.
  • Occasionally assists the full-time security staff with security and patrol duties.
  • May be assigned additional duties as deemed necessary.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English and to communicate effectively (written and oral).
  • Ability to react quickly and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to work as a team member on a 24-hour shift operation.
  • Requires the use of fire apparatus, patrol vehicles, radios, sirens, emergency lights, and other firefighting and rescue equipment.
  • Requires the use of various reports, contact cards, tickets, maps and lists.
  • Required to walk, run, climb, carry, use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, hoses, axes, pike poles, generators, and pumps.
  • Ability to complete the department's approved Ocean Reef Firefighter Readiness Drill and be able to wear and use protective fire equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities are required, including close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to recognize specific colors, designs, and logos.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds.

Education:
  • An Associate Degree from an accredited College or University in Fire Protection, Paramedic Medicine or a closely related field.

Experience:
  • At least one (1) full year of experience as a certified Paramedic and Firefighter.

Licenses, Certificates, or Other:
Minimum Required:
  • Valid Florida Driver License.
  • Florida Firefighter II Certification.
  • Florida Paramedic Certification and/or National Registry Paramedic Certification.

Any combination of the above education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the Firefighter Medic position will be considered.
