Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Welder III to join our team in Norfolk, VA. This position is responsible for performing complex welding tasks in support of ship repair and maritime fabrication projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in structural and pipe welding, a deep understanding of shipbuilding materials and techniques, and experience working in a shipyard or maritime industrial environment.

The successful candidate will join our Fleet Services Group, performing various ship repair, modernization, and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects in support of U.S. Navy and commercial maritime clients. This role requires precision, efficiency, and a commitment to quality workmanship in both shop and shipboard environments.

Essential duties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Join, fabricate, and repair metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques.
  • Perform various welding processes to repair, modify and install various pipes, structures, foundations and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic and water systems.
  • Fabricate and install fixtures and jigs required for welding process alignments.
  • Interpret blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process.
  • Select required welding filler materials, joint design, heat ranges and most effective or required welding process/procedure to ensure quality welding operations IAW TWD.
  • Inspect completed welds to determine structural soundness and adherence to NAVSEA, ABS & AWS standards.
  • Install or repairs equipment, such as pipes, valves, floors and tank linings.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse basic metal segments, using processes such as flux-cored arc, carbon arc, etc.
  • Weld multiple types, thicknesses & sizes of pipe, plate & bar material in horizontal, overhead and/or vertical positions.
  • Document objective quality evidence to the requisite Continental Tide Forms.
  • Demonstrate the ability to estimate a drawing package / installation.
  • Utilize the following: SMAW, GMAW & GTAW, Ship Fitting and OXY ACC & Propane GAS Cutting torch.
  • Provides leadership to technical project teams, oversees scheduling and task execution, and delivers regular updates and briefings to both customers and/or senior leadership

You may be required to perform additional duties outside of your standard responsibilities as needed to support project completion.


Requirements:

  • Must possess a high school, trade or vocational school degree.
  • Target of 10 years plus of direct experience in ship repair and installation of HM&E systems and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret ship installation drawings, installation specifications and NAVSEA Standard Items is preferred.
  • Must have or have the ability to obtain a SECRET clearance.
  • Must have the ability to obtain base access and security credentials.
  • Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
  • Due to export control regulations, this role is open to U.S. citizens only.
  • Possess basic and some advanced specialized welder's tools.
  • Previous welding certifications or ability to obtain welding qualifications may be used in lieu of experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to open-air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions.
  • Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore.
  • Must wear various types of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing, eye, head, and hand protection, as required.
  • Site visits may involve standing on a variety of surfaces and angles, bending, crouching, and climbing over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge or boat structural components.
  • Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
  • Must possess sufficient visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and night vision to inspect marine components and systems, identify defects or irregularities, and safely operate tools and equipment.
  • May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, including sitting and/or standing.
  • May be required to operate machinery, power tools, and/or heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively to exchange and comprehend information.
  • Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including high heat and extreme cold.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. or more, depending on the task requirements.
