Electrical Engineer - System Safety

Summary/Objective
KMS Solutions is seeking a highly motivated individual to join a team of engineers and technicians providing engineering and technical support to the Ranges, Engineering, and Analysis Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI. This multi-disciplinary team is responsible for providing systems safety, environmental qualification testing, and range sustainment in support of undersea warfare systems, including unmanned and autonomous systems. Candidates with education and experience in electrical engineering, as well as highly experienced electrical technicians, are encouraged to apply.
Essential Functions

  • Analyze system designs, specifications, drawings, and/or models to determine how Undersea Warfare (USW) Systems are developed to meet requirements and specifications throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Analyze USW systems to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications utilizing DoD and industry standards.
  • Evaluate the feasibility, design, operation and performance with respect to systems safety of embedded electrical systems and components using design schematics and drawings for USW systems.
  • Investigate potential design failures and make recommendations to ensure safe and effective operation and deployment and eliminate or reduce potential of system failures.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Ability to obtain a Secret DoD clearance.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field to electrical or electronics engineering OR equivalent technical work experience.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of engineering or technical experience.
  • Experience in systems engineering or failure analysis engineering methods.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience:
  • Experience with the Weapon Systems design, testing and/or evaluation.
  • Electrical engineering experience specifically in development, troubleshooting, and integration phases of a product lifecycle.
  • Engineering experience specifically with weapon or energetic systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of systems safety analyses using MIL-STD-882E and applicable system safety analyses.
  • Experience in reading and analyzing electrical diagrams regarding Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), and electrical/wiring or control circuit diagrams.
  • Strong proficiency in leveraging generative AI tools and prompt engineering methodologies to automate workflows, accelerate analyses, and improve organizational efficiencies.

Required Competencies:
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to all levels of the customer and company leadership.
  • Capable of effectively working and problem solving in both independent and team environments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail.

Preferred Competencies:
  • Experience communicating and interacting with all levels of the customer and company leadership.
  • Ability to work independently and seek guidance when required.
  • Signal processing, power distribution, and PCIe/JTAG standards knowledge.
  • Strong record of delivering quality independent analysis products.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and/or maintain a DoD Security Clearance and required access to all worksite locations.

Work Environment:
This job operates primarily in a professional office environment in person on a hybrid basis, with up to 16 hours of telework allowed weekly after an introduction period. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. The employee is expected to be able to travel to and work in navy facilities as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
The typical workday is eight hours in length. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, with concurrence from the supervisor. The employee must be available during the "core" work hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and must account for the hours in a pay period to maintain full-time status.
Telework:
  • This is a hybrid position. After the first six months, telework may be allowed for up to 40% per week - subject to change based on customer requirements.

Travel:
  • Ability to travel CONUS; potential to travel OCONUS.
  • Up to 10% travel may be required.
