What is a prompt engineer internship?

A Prompt Engineer Internship is a temporary position where interns learn to design, test, and optimize prompts for AI models such as ChatGPT or other large language models. Interns work alongside experienced prompt engineers to create effective instructions that guide AI systems to produce accurate, relevant, and safe responses. This role often involves experimentation, analysis, and collaboration with developers or researchers. It's a great opportunity for those interested in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and human-computer interaction. Interns typically gain hands-on experience in prompt engineering, data analysis, and understanding the limitations and capabilities of current AI models.

What do prompt engineer interns do?

As a Prompt Engineer Intern, you will typically work on developing, testing, and refining prompts for AI language models to optimize their performance across various applications. Your daily tasks may include experimenting with prompt phrasing, analyzing model outputs, collaborating with data scientists and product managers, and documenting best practices. Interns are often encouraged to share insights that improve prompt effectiveness and may contribute to internal knowledge bases. This role offers hands-on exposure to prompt engineering techniques and a chance to directly impact product features and user experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a prompt engineer intern?

To thrive as a Prompt Engineer Intern, you generally need a foundation in computer science, familiarity with natural language processing (NLP), and strong analytical skills, often supported by coursework or experience in AI or machine learning. Experience with programming languages like Python, APIs for large language models, and tools such as OpenAI or Hugging Face libraries is valuable. Creativity, critical thinking, and effective communication help interns design, test, and refine high-quality prompts collaboratively. These skills and qualities enable the intern to contribute meaningful insights, solve real-world challenges, and optimize AI model outputs in a rapidly evolving field.

What is the difference between Prompt Engineer Internship vs Data Scientist Internship?

AspectPrompt Engineer InternshipData Scientist Internship

Job description

  • Implement individual components of agentic solutions โ€” tool integrations, prompt templates, retrieval steps โ€” under the direction of senior engineers, writing clean, well-tested code and documenting your work clearly.
  • Learn how the team applies context engineering โ€” what an agent sees, when, and why โ€” and actively seek out knowledge of LLMs, agentic frameworks, and prompt engineering to apply to your work.
  • Help build and run evaluation scripts and offline benchmarks to check that agent behavior is safe, accurate, and reliable.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and design reviews, learning to debug issues and surface trade-offs on the specific functions or components you own.
  • Add basic instrumentation โ€” logging, metrics, alerts โ€” to the systems you build, and follow Nordstrom's engineering and security standards, including secure handling of sensitive data.
  • Collaborate with teammates across engineering, product, and business stakeholders to understand how your work fits into the larger solution.
Requirements
  • 1+ years of professional software engineering experience (internships count), or a relevant certification (e.g. bootcamp).
  • AI Fluency โ€” Required: Some hands-on exposure to LLMs or foundation model APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.), whether through coursework, projects, internships, or professional experience.
  • Genuine curiosity about agentic AI โ€” how agents use tools, retrieve context, and take actions โ€” and a desire to build production skills in this space.
  • Solid CS fundamentals โ€” data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design โ€” along with familiarity with RESTful APIs, JSON, and how services communicate with one another.
  • Basic understanding of software testing practices and version control (e.g. Git).
  • Willingness to learn modern agentic frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel, or the Claude Agent SDK.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and a collaborative, feedback-seeking mindset.
  • Coursework, personal projects, or internship experience involving prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or vector databases.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker) and CI/CD basics.
  • Interest or coursework in retail, e-commerce, or supply chain problem spaces.
  • Any contributions to open-source AI projects or personal experimentation with LLM applications.
Core Competencies

Demonstrates proficiency in software engineering with a focus on AI applications, including hands-on experience with LLMs and agentic frameworks. Capable of implementing robust solutions while adhering to engineering standards and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
