Job description

Job Title: Construction Senior Project Engineer
Job Description

The Construction Senior Project Engineer supports day-to-day site operations on large commercial projects, ensuring that schedule, quality, and documentation goals are consistently met. This role works closely with Superintendents and Project Managers to manage RFIs and submittals, maintain accurate project records, and coordinate project controls and safety documentation. The position is ideal for a construction professional with experience on large commercial projects who is looking for a clear career path toward an Assistant Project Manager or Project Manager role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Superintendents and Project Managers with day-to-day site management to ensure project schedule and quality objectives are achieved.
  • Manage the full RFI process from creation through response and close-out, ensuring timely communication and resolution of issues.
  • Oversee the submittal process, including preparation, tracking, review coordination, and maintaining complete submittal logs.
  • Process owner billings and invoices accurately and on time, and track job-cost codes to support effective cost control and reporting.
  • Resolve project-related accounting items by coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Maintain detailed daily logs documenting site activities, manpower, inspections, and key events.
  • Capture and organize progress photos to document construction progress and support reporting requirements.
  • Maintain and update material procurement logs to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.
  • Prepare, track, and help manage change orders, ensuring proper documentation and alignment with contract requirements.
  • Compile and organize close-out documents, including warranties, as-builts, and operations and maintenance manuals.
  • Help create, update, and monitor project schedules, with a preference for using MS Project, to support planning and progress tracking.
  • Coordinate subcontractor insurance, bonds, and compliance paperwork to ensure all contractual and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Support project safety by attending daily huddles, documenting inspections, and reinforcing adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with project teams to interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications and resolve technical questions.
  • Use construction management software and digital tools to manage documents, logs, and communication efficiently.
Essential Skills
  • 3+ years of construction experience with multiple completed projects.
  • Experience working on large commercial construction projects, ideally with values of $10 million or more.
  • Hands-on experience managing RFIs, submittals, and change orders from initiation through close-out.
  • Ability to run and maintain submittal logs and other project tracking tools.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Solid understanding of construction means and methods in a commercial environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for project documentation and communication.
  • Working knowledge of MS Project for creating and updating project schedules.
  • Experience using construction management platforms such as Procore or Prolog.
  • Demonstrated experience in commercial construction management, including coordination with subcontractors and vendors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate logs, records, and documentation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordination with project teams and stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with Bluebeam for reviewing and marking up construction drawings.
  • Background in estimation or exposure to estimating processes is beneficial.
  • Experience on large-scale commercial projects (for example, $10 million and above) is highly valued.
  • Interest in progressing along a defined career path from Project Engineer to Project Manager.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with field and office teams in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and timely completion of project tasks.
Work Environment

This role is based on site at a large commercial construction project in Hillsboro, a $60 million project with an anticipated duration of approximately 25 months. The work environment is an active construction site, requiring regular coordination with Superintendents, Project Managers, subcontractors, and field personnel. The project utilizes tools such as MS Project, Procore or Prolog, Bluebeam, and standard Microsoft Office applications to manage schedules, documentation, and communication. The developer has multiple additional projects planned, offering continuity of work and long-term project exposure. The position operates in a professional construction setting with a focus on safety, collaboration, and continuous project activity.
