What is a project surveyor?

Project Surveyors are professionals responsible for managing and overseeing the costs and financial aspects of construction projects. They ensure that building projects are completed within budget, evaluate contracts, and advise on procurement strategies. Project Surveyors also assess project risks, monitor progress, and liaise with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure the financial success of a project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project surveyor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Surveyor, you need a strong background in quantity surveying, construction management, and cost estimation, typically supported by a relevant degree and professional accreditation such as RICS or CIOB. Proficiency in cost management software, contract administration systems, and industry-standard measurement tools is crucial. Excellent negotiation, problem-solving, and communication skills help build strong client relationships and manage project teams effectively. These skills ensure accurate project delivery, cost control, and successful stakeholder collaboration throughout the construction process.

How does a project surveyor typically interact with other members of a construction project team?

A Project Surveyor works closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure that all cost-related aspects of a construction project are managed effectively. They attend regular meetings to discuss project budgets, track changes in project scope, and ensure that financial records are accurate and up to date. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as Project Surveyors often provide cost advice, negotiate contracts, and resolve any issues related to valuations or payments. This collaborative approach helps keep projects on budget and minimizes disputes.
