Job description

The Department of Biology is seeking a Research Assistant.
This Research Assistant will assist with studies using diverse budding yeast species, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida glabrata, and Candida auris, to elucidate the functions and evolution of fungal adhesins in the Hyr/Iff-like family. The duties of this Laboratory Research Assistant position includes basic yeast genetics, molecular cloning, and cell biology assays for adhesion functions. The individual is responsible for conducting these experiments following protocols provided by the lab, carefully recording all procedures in paper and electronic lab notebooks, archiving the raw data on lab servers (RDSS), and analyzing the data using general and statistical programming languages such as Python and R. Analysis code and outputs must be carefully documented in a git version-controlled repository.
This position is not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.
Position is 100% onsite.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigators of the research project.
  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for research protocols.
  • Set up and operate research materials or equipment.
  • Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports, and maintain records of methods used.
  • Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team.

Education Required
  • Bachelor's degree required in Biology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Laboratory experience through coursework.
  • Independent research in designing, conducting, and analyzing the results of experiments driven by hypothesis.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Biology.
  • Strong independent research experience in the field of evolutionary biology, with both benchwork and computational analyses.
  • Experience with immunofluorescence, microscopy, and applying molecular evolution techniques on protein sequence datasets are highly desirable.
