Job description

We are seeking a highly proficient and experienced Structural Steel Fitter to lead the fabrication and assembly of complex structural components for major construction and industrial projects. The ideal candidate will leverage advanced skills in blueprint analysis, precision measurement, and fitting techniques to ensure all work meets stringent quality and safety standards. This role involves supervision and requires the ability to troubleshoot complex challenges, mentor junior staff, and collaborate effectively with project managers.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Blueprint and Specification Mastery: Interpret and analyze shop drawings, blueprints (including isometric and orthographic projections), and project specifications to determine material requirements, task sequences, and optimal fitting methods.
  • Layout and Measurement: Accurately lay out reference points and patterns on heavy metal components, accounting for material properties, stock thickness, and welding shrinkage.
  • Complex Assembly and Fitting: Position, align, and fit large-scale steel components (beams, columns, frames, etc.) using various tools like jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, and rigging equipment.
  • Operation of Heavy Machinery: Safely and efficiently operate a wide array of machinery and tools, including, saws, laser plasma cutters, press brakes, overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts.
  • Welding and Fabrication Expertise: Perform advanced fitting and tack welding, and when necessary, full welding using various techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick, FCAW) to secure components, ensuring robust joint integrity per American Welding Society (AWS) or other applicable standards.
  • Quality Control and Inspection: Conduct rigorous quality control inspections on fabricated components and assemblies to verify conformance with tight tolerances and engineering standards, making adjustments as needed. (WABO)
  • Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Proactively identify and resolve discrepancies between blueprints and actual materials or unforeseen issues during assembly, minimizing rework and waste.
  • Leadership and Mentoring: Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to junior fitters and apprentices, fostering a culture of skill development and continuous improvement.
  • Safety Compliance: Champion a strong safety culture, ensuring all fitting activities adhere to company policies, OSHA standards, and other federal/state regulations.

Required Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of proven experience as a structural steel fitter in a construction or manufacturing environment, with experience in a senior or lead role preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of steel fabrication processes, metal properties, load calculations, and structural analysis principles.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications such as from the American Welding Society (AWS) or in advanced rigging are a significant advantage.
