Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to join our dynamic team and play a key role in CanWestโ€™s senior management. The Senior Project Manager will oversee the day-to-day management of industrial client projects from initial estimating through to completion. This role involves managing multiple projects (ranging from $1K to $30 million in value) and ensuring they are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

The ideal candidate is an engineer, technologist, or tradesperson with extensive project management experience in an industrial contracting environment. As part of our senior management team, you will provide leadership to project teams and contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives within the company.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management and Delivery

  • Plan, execute, and oversee multiple industrial projects from estimating and proposal development through to completion. Projects may range from $1K to $30 million in value.
  • Develop project plans, milestones, priorities, and accountabilities that support delivery against approved scope, schedule, and budget.

Team Leadership and Coordination

  • Lead and coordinate CanWest tradespeople, subcontractors, and internal support staff across active projects.
  • Provide clear direction, mentorship, and day-to-day support to project teams to promote consistent execution.
  • Foster a positive work environment built on teamwork, safety, accountability, and strong communication.

Client and Stakeholder Relations

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for industrial clients throughout the project lifecycle, building and maintaining strong working relationships that support customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain clear, professional, and timely communication with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Address scope changes, client concerns, and project issues with sound judgment.

Safety and Compliance

  • Champion a strong safety culture across all project sites and reinforce safe work practices through consistent leadership.
  • Ensure project work complies with applicable safety regulations, environmental standards, company policies, and union requirements where applicable.
  • Uphold CanWestโ€™s standards for quality, safety, technical excellence, and responsible project execution.
  • Support corrective actions when safety, compliance, or quality concerns are identified.

Budget and Risk Management

  • Monitor project costs, schedules, and overall performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage project budgets, forecasting, cost controls, and regular project performance reporting.
  • Identify and mitigate risks proactively to reduce delays, cost overruns, and disruptions to project delivery. Implement corrective actions as necessary.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with engineering, procurement, and fabrication teams to support project feasibility and efficient execution.
  • Coordinate with senior management on resource allocation, operational priorities, and project delivery needs.
  • Contribute to high-level decision-making and operational improvements that support stronger project execution.

Senior Leadership and Business Development

  • Participate in CanWestโ€™s senior management meetings and initiatives. Provide insight into project operations, delivery risks, client needs, and opportunities to improve how work is planned and executed.
  • Help shape company policies and project practices that support consistency, accountability, and business growth.
  • Mentor the next generation of leaders and support business development efforts as needed, including bid preparation and client presentations.

Requirements

Education and Certifications

  • Engineer (P.Eng.), certified engineering technologist, or Red Seal tradesperson strongly preferred, combined with extensive project management training.
  • An equivalent combination of education and hands-on trade experience in industrial construction will also be considered.
  • Project management certification, such as PMP, is considered an asset.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Minimum 10 years of project management experience in industrial construction or mechanical contracting.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering projects in sectors such as power generation, oil and gas, mining, pulp and paper, or related heavy industries.
  • Experience managing projects of similar scale, ranging from $1 million to $30 million, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with estimating and bidding industrial projects is required.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial construction and fabrication processes, trades practices, and relevant codes and standards.
  • Exceptional leadership and team management abilities. Able to lead diverse crews, including unionized trades, subcontractors, and professionals, to deliver results.
  • Experience working with unionized workforces and understanding of collective agreements is an asset.
  • Adept at risk assessment and problem resolution. Able to remain calm under pressure, make informed decisions swiftly, and adapt to changing project demands while keeping teams motivated and focused.
  • Deep commitment to workplace health and safety and quality control.

Technical Skills

  • Able to review specifications and drawings and develop comprehensive project estimates and execution plans.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools, with experience using systems like Procore or similar PM software considered an asset.
