Job Description Summary

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for working with cross-functional teams in determining project goals and packaging requirements and specifications; analyzing engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine packaging requirements; designing and developing packaging for new and existing products; consulting with purchasing to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging; developing protocols for testing and approving new packaging materials and systems; developing and implementing packaging process improvement strategies and management tools; solving technical problems; and maintaining records of packaging development activities, test data, and other pertinent information for each project.

What You'll Do:

Packaging Engineer Responsibilities

  • Work with cross-functional teams to determine project goals and packaging requirements and specifications.
  • Work with product development to design and develop packaging for new and existing products combining optimum protection of product, manufacturing ergonomics and marketing presentation; ensure new product packaging designs are aligned according to specifications.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special-handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for packaging.
  • Develop or direct development of sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging in order to present design for approval.
  • Consult with purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.
  • Develop and review logistics processes to ensure optimal packaging and handling of material

Continuous Improvement

  • Serve as a technical resource for problem solving activities: root cause analysis, countermeasure development, and solution implementation
  • Support continuous improvement activities by redesigning, testing and implementing packaging for existing products with emphasis on cost optimization and improved manufacturing processes for finished goods packaging, supplier/raw goods packaging and inter/intra company packaging.
  • Develop and implement process improvements strategies and accompanying process management tools.
  • Contribute to the development of operating procedures, standardized practices, material specifications and validation test methods.
  • Investigate new sources for packaging materials.

Part Master Data Integrity and Reporting

  • Maintain records of packaging development activities, test data, and other pertinent information for each project.
  • Establish project schedules and project reports to out-line progress and to ensure milestones are reached
  • Develop and maintain part master and PIM standards in WMS and SAP systems in regards to packaging, weight, and part information
  • Participate in Umlauf and PCN processes; and any other processes involving packaging changes or creation
  • Create ad hoc reports and metrics

Other

  • Organize and/or attend meetings as required.
  • Communicate well between facilities and departments, both in person and remotely
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
  • Occasional travel to out of state facilities for information gathering and analysis.

Education, Certification/License & Work Experience

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering or related discipline
  • 2-3 years of experience in packaging design and development, preferred

Total Rewards Package:

Compensation

  • Base: $58,000 - $76,000 annually, based on specific compensable factors including, but not limited to education, work experience, and geographic market.
  • Bonus: This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance.
