ResponsibilitiesPOSITION SUMMARY:

The Project Engineer supports the successful planning and execution of heavy civil construction projects. Working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen, the Project Engineer assists with field operations, project controls, cost and production tracking, contract administration, and coordination while developing the technical, operational, and financial skills necessary to manage projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safety

  • Support the project team in maintaining a safe work environment and ensuring compliance with company, project, and regulatory safety requirements.
  • Prepare and give daily safety huddles, weekly Toolbox Talks, and periodic jobsite safety inspections.
  • Maintain project safety documentation, including utility locate requests, Hazard Communication/SDS records, inspections, and incident documentation.
  • Work closely with field supervision to identify potential safety concerns and ensure they are communicated and addressed promptly.

Field Operations & Planning

  • Work closely with the Project Manager, Superintendent, and Foremen to plan, coordinate, and execute daily and upcoming construction operations.
  • Review project plans, specifications, contract documents, and field conditions to develop a thorough understanding of project requirements.
  • Participate in daily and weekly planning discussions regarding manpower, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and upcoming work activities.
  • Develop and maintain short-term look-ahead schedules in coordination with field supervision.
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs, material procurement, and coordination of material deliveries.
  • Spend regular time in the field observing operations, verifying work against plans and specifications, and developing an understanding of construction means, methods, sequencing, and productivity.
  • Identify potential field conflicts, constructability concerns, and impacts to upcoming operations and communicate them to project leadership.

Cost, Production & Project Controls

  • Track daily installed quantities, labor, equipment, and major materials in coordination with the Superintendent and Foremen.
  • Monitor and record production rates and actual costs against the project estimate and budget.
  • Maintain accurate quantity tracking to complete timely owner payment applications and project cost reporting.
  • Assist the Project Manager with monthly cost reviews, forecasting, and identification of potential cost overruns or underruns.
  • Track extra work and changed conditions and maintain supporting documentation for potential change orders.
  • Review material and supplier invoices for accuracy and proper project cost coding.
  • Submit monthly estimates with subcontractor payment sheets to Accounting timely upon approval from owner.
  • Develop an understanding of the project's estimate, phase codes, budget, and anticipated production rates.

Project Documentation & Contract Administration

  • Develop and maintain project submittal, RFI, shop drawing, correspondence, delivery, and subcontractor logs.
  • Prepare, submit, and track RFIs and submittals in accordance with project requirements.
  • Review subcontractor and supplier submittals for completeness and compliance with contract requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and organized project records, including documentation necessary to support payment, changes, claims, and project closeout.
  • Track work completed on project plans and assist with maintaining accurate as-built information.
  • Assist with certified payroll, EEO, trainee, and other owner-required documentation.

Coordination & Communication

  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, field personnel, inspectors, and project stakeholders to support successful project execution.
  • Participate in project meetings with the Project Manager and Superintendent and assist with documenting and following up on action items.
  • Communicate upcoming project needs, potential conflicts, schedule impacts, and cost concerns to project leadership in a timely manner.
  • Develop professional working relationships with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and field personnel.
  • Assist the Project Manager and Superintendent with other project-related responsibilities as needed to support safe, timely, and profitable completion of the work.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS. degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Approximately 2 to 4 years of related heavy civil construction experience preferred.
  • Experience in heavy construction, including roadway, site work, underground utilities, structures, or environmental/infrastructure work, is preferred.
  • FDOT or other DOT/public infrastructure experience is preferred but not required.
  • Self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with field personnel, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and company leadership.
  • Strong follow-through and willingness to spend meaningful time in the field learning construction operations.
