Job description

Description

Traffic Engineering Intern

Westwood Professional Services

The Traffic Intern will join a traffic engineering team supporting signal design, traffic studies, and roadway safety projects for municipalities, counties, DOTs, and other public agencies. Projects range from small intersection improvement studies to large corridor signal timing and traffic impact analyses supporting regional transportation networks. This position offers direct opportunity to apply traffic engineering coursework to real-world public transportation projects.

As a Traffic Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards - including state DOT traffic designs - while assisting Senior Engineers in the preparation of traffic studies, signal plans, and signing and striping plans. The intern will build foundational proficiency in the traffic analysis and design software used throughout the traffic engineering practice.

Requirements

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the collection and analysis of traffic count, turning movement, and travel time data for traffic studies.
  • Use AutoCAD Civil3D, MicroStations, OpenRoads, or other related software to prepare and check working drawings, details, layouts, and estimates.
  • Support preparation of signal timing plans, signing and striping plans, and maintenance of traffic control plans.
  • Help develop traffic impact studies and capacity analyses using standard traffic engineering software.
  • Develop an understanding of client interests and help identify approaches to address client concerns in the performance of project work.
  • Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across public infrastructure projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to conduct field observations and interface directly with clients and public agency staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate Civil Engineering program or related field of study.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions, including roadside data collection, on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in traffic or transportation engineering.
