Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, consumer electronics manufacturingMass production industries, factory settings

Project Engineer Tooling focuses on designing and implementing tooling solutions for manufacturing processes, while Manufacturing Engineers work on optimizing overall production efficiency. Both roles require engineering backgrounds and are integral to manufacturing industries, but their specific responsibilities differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Engineer Tooling, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Tooling, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering or a related field, experience in tooling design, and knowledge of manufacturing processes. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), project management tools, and industry-specific standards or certifications (like Six Sigma or PMP) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills help you collaborate effectively and manage complex projects. These skills ensure efficient tooling development, on-time project delivery, and seamless coordination between engineering, production, and quality teams.

What does a Project Engineer Tooling do?

A Project Engineer Tooling is responsible for designing, developing, and managing the tools, molds, and fixtures required for manufacturing processes. They coordinate projects from conception through production, ensuring tooling meets quality, cost, and timeline requirements. Their duties often include collaborating with design teams, suppliers, and production staff to optimize tool performance and address technical challenges. Project Engineer Tooling professionals play a key role in ensuring efficient and reliable manufacturing operations.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Project Engineer Tooling during the launch of a new manufacturing tool?

A Project Engineer Tooling often encounters challenges such as managing tight deadlines, ensuring precise tool specifications, and coordinating with cross-functional teams like design, production, and quality assurance. During new tool launches, unexpected technical issues or delays from suppliers can arise, requiring quick problem-solving and effective communication. Successfully navigating these challenges involves strong project management skills, adaptability, and the ability to collaborate closely with both internal teams and external vendors.

Job description

About Standard Bots
At Standard Bots, we're revolutionizing real-world automation by making robotic systems accessible to everyone. Our platform enables robots to tackle unprecedented challenges through an intuitive instruction interface, bringing the power of software automation to physical spaces.
Location and Benefits
This role is hybrid with 3 days/week onsite in our NYC office, centrally located near Grand Central Station. The office is fully equipped with robots for demos and testing! This specific role will also spend ~4 days/month in our Glen Cove robotics facility.
About the Role
We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure & Developer Tooling to lead and scale the core infrastructure and internal tooling that power our robot deployment and development lifecycle. This high-impact role blends distributed systems, DevOps, and developer experience to support mission-critical robotics operations. You'll serve as the technical lead for infrastructure efforts and will likely lead 1-2 other engineers, with the opportunity to grow into a broader leadership role as the team expands.
You'll own key initiatives that ensure our robots are securely deployed, monitored, and updated at scale, while also enabling fast and reliable development across the engineering org. This is a unique opportunity to shape the foundational systems of a fast-moving robotics company from the ground up.
In this role, you will:
  • Lead Infrastructure Development:
    • Design and implement scalable infrastructure for robot deployment pipelines
    • Build and maintain systems for automated robot software updates and provisioning
    • Develop robust CI/CD pipelines and environment management workflows
  • Scale our multi-cloud infrastructure with an emphasis on:
    • Robot fleet management and telemetry
    • Secure robot-cloud communication
    • Cloud resource cost efficiency and availability
  • Own Observability and Reliability by implementing and evolving observability systems to:
    • Monitor robot fleet health, uptime, and usage
    • Track system performance and deployment success rates
    • Detect, alert, and diagnose production infrastructure issues automatically
  • Lead Developer Tooling Efforts:
    • Build internal tools to improve developer workflows, testing, and release velocity
    • Define and promote engineering best practices through tooling, automation, and documentation
    • Support environment provisioning, local dev experiences, and standardized testing environments
  • Drive Security and Compliance:
    • Design and maintain secure infrastructure systems, including:
      • Identity and access management (IAM), authentication, and secrets management
      • Network security for robot-cloud interactions
      • Incident response and security auditing tools
  • Collaborate Across the Organization:
    • Work closely with software engineers, QA, Solutions, and Assembly Tech teams to understand technical pain points and infrastructure needs
    • Advocate for engineering efficiency and reliability through process and platform improvements

This role is a strong fit if you:
  • Have 7+ years of software engineering experience, including leadership in DevOps and infrastructure projects
  • Have a proven track record with CI/CD systems, distributed systems, and developer tooling
  • Are experienced with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and Kubernetes
  • Bring a strong understanding of security best practices in cloud-native environments
  • Have experience implementing and scaling monitoring, logging, and alerting systems
  • Are passionate about building platforms that support world-class engineering teams
  • Have an interest in robotics and automation (robotics experience not required)

Tech Stack
  • Python
  • NodeJS / TypeScript
  • React
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • Terraform
  • Postgres
  • Cloudflare
