Job description

The Opportunity

Beth Tikvah Congregation and Centre is a vibrant, welcoming Conservative Jewish community in Richmond, BC, dedicated to cultivating Jewish identity, community and connectedness.

Through worship, learning, lifecycle events, cultural and educational programming, social gatherings and community initiatives, Beth Tikvah creates meaningful opportunities for people of all ages and stages of Jewish life to find belonging, build relationships, celebrate traditions and engage with one another.

Beth Tikvah is entering an important period of growth, renewal and long-term planning and is seeking an accomplished, community-centred and relationship-driven Executive Director to help shape its next chapter.

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working in close partnership with the Rabbi, the Executive Director will provide strategic and operational leadership while strengthening the financial and organizational foundations required for Beth Tikvah’s long-term sustainability.

This is a broad and highly visible leadership role. The Executive Director will lead the synagogue’s day-to-day administration and staff, develop and execute a multi-year fundraising and revenue strategy, oversee financial and operational management, strengthen organizational capacity, support the Board and its committees, and cultivate strong relationships across the congregation and wider community.

A significant priority will be building Beth Tikvah’s philanthropic capacity. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board and community leaders to develop a more strategic and diversified approach to fundraising, personally cultivate donor and funding relationships, and build the systems and partnerships required to support Beth Tikvah’s future.

This is an opportunity for a leader who enjoys moving between strategy and execution. Someone equally comfortable meeting with a donor, reviewing a budget, coaching a staff member, engaging with a congregant, collaborating with volunteers and addressing the day-to-day needs of a busy community organization.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Sustainability & Philanthropy

  • Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising and revenue strategy aligned with Beth Tikvah’s operating, strategic and capital priorities.
  • Lead a diversified fundraising portfolio that may include major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation support, grants, sponsorships and special campaigns.
  • Personally identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospective funding partners.
  • Work with the Board, Rabbi and community leaders to strengthen Beth Tikvah’s culture and capacity for philanthropy.
  • Develop a strong donor pipeline and effective approaches to donor stewardship, recognition and impact reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to diversify revenue and strengthen long-term financial sustainability.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting and financial planning in partnership with the Treasurer, Finance Committee and Board.

Strategic & Organizational Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of a multi-year strategic plan.
  • Translate organizational priorities into measurable goals, timelines and action plans.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen organizational capacity, effectiveness and service to the congregation.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Rabbi and Board on organizational, financial, staffing and community matters.
  • Lead organizational change thoughtfully while respecting Beth Tikvah’s history, traditions, relationships and community culture.

Operations & Staff Leadership

  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for the synagogue’s day-to-day operations and office administration.
  • Lead, supervise, coach and support Beth Tikvah’s (non-Rabbinic) staff.
  • Recruit, onboard, develop and retain staff as organizational needs evolve.
  • Establish clear roles, expectations and accountabilities and address performance and workplace matters appropriately.
  • Evaluate staffing structures and recommend improvements that support organizational priorities.
  • Oversee key operational areas including facilities, vendors, technology, security, risk management and member services.
  • Provide oversight of Beth Tikvah’s buildings, grounds, cemeteries, maintenance and security needs.
  • Foster a respectful, collaborative, accountable and healthy workplace culture.

Board Partnership & Governance

  • Serve as the principal staff liaison to the Board of Directors and work closely with the Rabbi and Board committees.
  • Provide timely, accurate and candid information to support effective decision-making.
  • Ensure Board decisions and strategic priorities are translated into organizational action.
  • Support the continued development of effective governance practices and greater clarity between Board and staff responsibilities.
  • Work collaboratively with Board members as organizational ambassadors, community connectors and philanthropic partners.

Community, Membership & Relationship Building

  • Build trusted relationships with the Rabbi, congregants, donors, volunteers, community partners and other stakeholders.
  • Work with the Rabbi, staff and volunteers to strengthen member engagement, participation, retention and the overall congregational experience.
  • Identify opportunities to welcome and engage families, young adults, seniors, newcomers and other constituencies.
  • Act as a visible and trusted ambassador for Beth Tikvah within the Jewish and broader community.
  • Build productive relationships with Jewish communal organizations, educational and cultural institutions, non-profits, funders and community partners.
  • Foster a culture of hospitality, inclusion, belonging and connection.

The Ideal Candidate

Beth Tikvah is seeking a strategic and hands-on leader who combines strong fundraising and organizational acumen with genuine warmth, emotional intelligence and an appreciation for community.

The successful candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Approximately 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally including significant responsibility for fundraising, philanthropy or revenue development.
  • Demonstrated success cultivating donors, developing philanthropic relationships and generating sustainable funding.
  • Leadership experience within a non-profit, community, cultural, educational, religious, membership-based or similarly complex organization.
  • A high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Experience in strategic planning, organizational development, change management and operational leadership.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, developing and supervising staff.
  • Experience working effectively with Boards, committees, volunteers, donors and community stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple strategic and operational priorities.
  • Sound judgement, discretion, integrity and professionalism.
  • A collaborative leadership style combined with the confidence to make decisions, navigate challenging conversations and take accountability.

Knowledge of or experience within the Jewish community is highly valued. Candidates without direct Jewish communal experience will also be considered where they bring strong transferable leadership experience, cultural sensitivity and a genuine respect for Jewish traditions, values and communal life.
