Civil Engineering Intern | Bozeman, MT

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities.

IMEG is hiring a Civil Engineering Intern in Bozeman, MT to work closely with experienced engineers and consultants on engineering analysis, design, field inspections, writing reports, preparing permit applications, and site drainage and grading designs. Over 10-12 weeks, this paid internship offers hands-on exposure to the civil engineering trade through real project work that supports day-to-day project delivery.

In this role, you'll contribute to projects while working within project budgets and collaborating with cross-functional teams to help meet project goals and client expectations. You'll support residential and land development work while gaining experience with resilient, environmentally responsible infrastructure that helps shape growing communities.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with design portions of projects related to discipline systems according to code and IMEG standards.
  • Assist with researching commercially available equipment and resources.
  • Assist with client relations, project design notebooks, and documentation for permanent record files.
  • Assist with coordinating design and schedule with other disciplines, including architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers.
  • Assist with documenting design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project design progress.
  • Assist with reviewing project documents for accuracy and completeness prior to requesting a final check.
  • Assist with preparing and issuing addendum information.
  • Conduct periodic job site observations and all other services as required by the contract services agreement.

Education

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required

Required Skills/Abilities

  • May be required to assist with field duties such as surveying and materials testing
  • Strong interest in design consulting
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs, CAD software and BIM
  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Preferred

  • Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull
  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises

About the Team

  • This civil team is heavily focused on residential and subdivision development in the Bozeman area.
  • The team supports subgrade inspection, site plans, staking, and subdivision feasibility work across Bozeman and Big Sky.
  • Team members handle geotechnical reports, septic permitting, and commercial site support in the Billings market.
  • The team also works on boundary survey, ALTA, and land development for multi-family and custom homes.
  • Recent work includes Big Sky Subgrade Inspections, Housing; Gallatin County Septic & Geotech, Housing; and Billings Commercial Site Plans, Commercial.
