What is a programme manager?

A Programme Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with business objectives and deliver value. They coordinate project managers, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders to ensure successful program delivery. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, programme managers maintain a big-picture view, managing interdependencies and risks across projects. Their work is essential in achieving strategic goals and driving organizational change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programme manager?

To thrive as a Programme Manager, you need expertise in project management, strategic planning, and stakeholder coordination, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana and experience with budgeting and resource allocation systems are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programme Managers navigate complex projects and motivate cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure programmes are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

How does a programme manager typically balance multiple projects and ensure effective communication among project teams?

A Programme Manager often oversees several related projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. They manage interdependencies and allocate resources while regularly coordinating with project managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to align goals and timelines. Effective Programme Managers establish regular check-ins, use collaborative tools, and create transparent reporting structures to keep everyone informed and address issues proactively. This approach helps prevent bottlenecks and ensures that programme objectives are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Programme Manager vs Project Manager?

AspectProgramme ManagerProject Manager
Primary FocusOversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectivesManages individual projects to deliver specific outputs
ScopeBroader, long-term initiativesSpecific, short-term deliverables
ResponsibilitiesAligns projects with organizational goals, manages interdependenciesPlans, executes, and closes projects within scope, time, and budget
CredentialsOften PMP or PgMP, relevant experience in program managementPMP or similar project management certifications

While both roles require strong project management skills and certifications like PMP, a Programme Manager focuses on coordinating multiple related projects to achieve strategic business objectives, whereas a Project Manager concentrates on delivering specific project outputs within defined constraints.

How much does a Programme Manager make?

The average salary for a Programme Manager varies depending on experience, industry, and location, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually. Senior Programme Managers with certifications like MSP or PMP and strong leadership skills tend to earn higher salaries. Compensation may also include bonuses and benefits based on project scope and organizational size.

What does a programme manager actually do?

A programme manager oversees multiple related projects to ensure they align with organizational goals and deliver value. They coordinate teams, manage budgets, monitor progress, and communicate with stakeholders to ensure successful completion of the overall program. Strong leadership, planning skills, and familiarity with project management tools like MS Project or Jira are essential.

Job description

Job Summary:
ProRata.ai is redefining digital advertising for the AI era through its innovative ProRata Ads platform. They are seeking a Principal Program Manager to lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of core AdTech product initiatives, ensuring successful collaboration across various teams and partners.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Lead end-to-end program planning and execution for major AdTech initiatives, including the ad serving system, agentic backend workflows, campaign/creative management tools, scalable reporting, and fraud detection systems.
โ€ข Partner closely with the Principal Software Engineering Manager (Tech Lead) and engineering teams to define technical roadmaps, break down epics into actionable milestones, and drive on-time delivery.
โ€ข Collaborate with the frontend team, Product, and Business Development to align on requirements for campaign management, creative optimization, and advertiser/publisher-facing features.
โ€ข Manage cross-functional dependencies, risks, and blockers โ€” proactively surfacing issues and coordinating resolutions across Engineering, Product, Design, and external partners (publishers, SSPs, DSPs).
โ€ข Establish and maintain clear program artifacts: roadmaps, timelines, status reporting, RACI matrices, and success metrics to ensure transparency for leadership and stakeholders.
โ€ข Drive launch readiness and post-launch activities, including go-to-market coordination, partner integration support, performance monitoring, and iterative improvements.
โ€ข Facilitate effective working sessions, prioritization decisions, and trade-off discussions between technical constraints and business needs.
โ€ข Continuously improve program management processes, tools, and best practices as the AdTech platform scales from pilots to production traffic.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 8+ years of experience in Program Management, Technical Program Management, or related roles, with a proven track record delivering complex software products at scale.
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to manage large-scale technical programs involving distributed systems, low-latency infrastructure, and emerging AI/ML components.
โ€ข Strong technical fluency โ€” able to understand system architecture, APIs, scalability challenges, and AI concepts (LLMs, agentic workflows, inference) without writing production code.
โ€ข Excellent project and program management skills, including roadmap planning, risk management, dependency tracking, and stakeholder communication.
โ€ข Exceptional communication and influence skills โ€” able to align diverse teams (engineering, product, business) and present clearly to executives.
โ€ข Comfort operating in a startup environment with evolving requirements, high ambiguity, and rapid iteration.
โ€ข Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Preferred:
โ€ข Experience working in advertising technology (ad serving, programmatic, real-time bidding, or AI-driven ad platforms) is strongly preferred.
โ€ข Prior experience with GenAI/LLM-powered products, prompt engineering, or agentic systems.
โ€ข Background in adtech ecosystems (OpenRTB, header bidding, SSP/DSP integrations, ad quality, fraud detection).
โ€ข Hands-on experience with agile methodologies, Jira/Asana/Linear, and program management tools.
โ€ข Startup experience โ€” thriving in resource-constrained, high-ownership environments.
โ€ข Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and AI inference challenges.
Company:
ProRata specializes in building AI-powered search and advertising solutions that prioritize content attribution for the original creators. Founded in 2024, the company is headquartered in Pasadena, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
