Responsibilities

Summary:

The Substance Abuse Counselor acts as a support to the sites they are assigned to. When needed, tracks and documents participant progress in case reports while working to meet all required internal and external contract standards and policies. This position in the absence of the Lead, Counselor Supervisor, supervises the activities and staff associated with providing substance abuse counseling within a facility. In addition, this position ensures that all services meet all contractual obligations. Conducts or assists in conducting individual and/or group counseling sessions and programs.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for the clinical supervision of staff and the clinical oversight and clinical care of all substance abuse services provided on site.
  • Presents individual counseling/group lectures and didactic presentations weekly based on the areas of Relapse Prevention, Anger Management, Parenting skills, Life Skills, Criminal & Addictive Behaviors, and Co-occurring disorders.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor facilitates psycho-educational/behavior modification groups using principles of the “What Works” system. Documents participants’ attendance, participation and progress in Company database.
  • Maintains records of absences and vacation schedules for represented staff. Monitors and modifies electronic payroll attendance records for union employees. Observes and oversees adherence to all policies and procedures. Monitors violations and administers disciplinary action.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor provides support for substance abuse program activities including providing activity reports, reviewing the files of subordinates to ensure accurate and timely documentation, and creating an environment which supports that mission of the program.
  • Works collaboratively with the agency and institution staff.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor completes comprehensive assessment of inmates’ substance abuse history and treatment requirements and develops individualized treatment plan. Document all assessment and treatment planning.
  • Presents individual counseling/group lectures and didactic presentations weekly based on the areas of Relapse Prevention, Anger Management, Parenting skills, Life Skills, Criminal & Addictive Behaviors, and Co-occurring disorders.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor facilitates psycho-educational/behavior modification groups using principles of the “What Works” system. Documents participants’ attendance, participation and progress in Company database. Conducts risk/need assessments and creates individual treatment plans for each assigned participant. Meets regularly with participants and documents participants’ progress or regress in Company database (when available).
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor maintains accurate clinical documentation including intake summaries, group notes, discharge summaries, treatment plans and updates. Update therapeutic logs in a timely manner. Enters pertinent information into Company database (when available).
  • Ensures that participants’ records are accurately completed in a timely manner.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor identifies problem areas that may impact participants’ ability to successfully complete treatment. Guides participants to develop strategies to overcome obstacles to success completion of treatment.
  • Utilizes crisis intervention techniques if an emergency arises.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor utilizes conflict resolution strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Counseling, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related field (Master’s Degree preferred.)
  • Certified Addiction Professional endorsement (CAP) or Master’s Level Certified Addictions Professional (MCAP), or Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHC).
  • Have working knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy programs.
  • Proven experience in supervising a substance abuse program.
  • Preference given to experience within a correctional setting.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
