Job description
The Sleep, Eating and Affect (SEA) Laboratory seeks a Program Project Manager to oversee and support a growing research program focused on mind and body interventions for mental and physical health states. This position is based at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health at the Mt. Zion campus, with some capacity for work from home. The Program Project Manager will work primarily on analyzing and overseeing the conduct of the laboratory's program of research, which includes analyzing needs for the lab, overseeing study progress, and performing daily research activities. The research studies taking place in SEA Lab include the following:
- Testing cognitive behavioral therapy and whole-body heating protocols for the treatment of depression
- Testing cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and home-based infrared body heating for the treatment of insomnia
- Testing the impact of whole-body heating on the excretion of bodily chemicals in firefighters
- Testing the impact of a novel gastrointestinal intervention on the excretion of PFAS chemicals in firefighters
Testing the impact of community sauna bathing on loneliness in emerging adults.
The SEA Laboratory interventions are diverse, ranging from whole-body heating and sauna research to psychotherapy and digital therapeutics. Similarly, the SEA Laboratory designs interventions for several populations, including civilians, firefighters, and military service members.
The ideal Program Project Manager for this position is very proactive, highly organized, extremely detail-oriented, and possesses excellent communication skills. The ideal Program Project Manager for this position has experience with project management, including overseeing the work of team members. Under the supervision of the PI, the Project Manager will:
- Analyze study needs to enact study planning, development, and implementation
- Analyze study progress to course correct and make changes to recruitment and retention protocols as needed
- Facilitate study team communications, including coordinating and facilitating research meetings, distributing materials, and corresponding about projects' progression.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with external collaborators in academic and community-based settings
- Provide support for administrative requirements of research conduct, such as obtaining necessary approvals, modifying Institutional Review Board applications, registering studies on clinicaltrials.gov and other registration websites, and onboarding research team personnel
- Create databases and manage data collection and partner with the team's statistician in preparation of study reports and presentations (e.g., data safety monitoring board report and presentation slides)
- Collaborate with the PI and research team to support ongoing grant progress reports and new grant proposals
- Analyze scientific literature to contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
- Support the team with a can-do attitude - filling in gaps where needed.

Department Description: The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health is an interdisciplinary center that includes clinical, educational, and research programs. Of particular relevance for this position, the UCSF Osher Center is committed to advancing the science of integrative health by conducting and disseminating rigorous research.
Note on workplace: 3-days onsite minimum, 3-5 days can be required depending on study needs.

- Experience with body-based intervention provision, particularly thermal treatments such as sauna, whole-body heating, cold plunge.
- Experience with psychological treatment modalities, in particular cognitive behavioral therapy, for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and/or insomnia.

- Analyzing study needs to prepare protocols for, managing data systems for, and analyzing clinical outcome data from, research studies within the SEA Laboratory. This includes preparing items for weekly team meetings, tracking action items for team members, and following up to ensure task completion.
Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares information for use in discussions / meetings of internal and external constituents for the SEA Lab. This includes but is not limted to:
- Summarizes information collected from internal and external collaborators, vendors, and consultants for the PI. Prepares information for use in weekly team meetings and maintains running meeting agenda.
On a project basis, performs analytical studies on a variety of policies, research initiatives, programs and issues for the SEA Lab. This includes the following:
- Develops and analyzes study protocols and study operations systems. Identifies areas for optimization and implements improvements. For example, creates databases and manages data collection efforts that include conducting, coordinating, and tracking participant data. Works with project stakeholders (e.g., study statisticians, study research coordinators) to develop systems that meet all user needs.
Coordinates program planning and collaboration with program and project staff. This includes the following:
- Maintains project tracking systems, assesses performances of timeline and tracking systems developed and iterates as needed to optimize systems.
- Tracks activities to ensure high data collection fidelity and rigorous study conduct, reviews and delegates tasks to research coordinators and follows up on tasks to ensure completion, works with study statistician to perform data quality checks.
- Oversight of IRB process for relevant projects, drawing from proficient understanding of grant and supporting materials to oversee the development and drafting IRB applications; manages and leads IRB communications and revisions with lab staff.
