Overview
The Health Information Management Intern's role is to actively engage in a comprehensive learning experience under the guidance of the Health Information Management Supervisor. This internship aims to provide the intern with practical insights into the pivotal role that the HIM Department plays within the primary care environment. Through hands-on participation and guided training, the intern will develop a foundational understanding of health information management practices, data integrity, and patient privacy regulations. The role's purpose is to equip the intern with valuable skills and knowledge that contribute to the efficient organization, maintenance, and security of patient health information, ultimately supporting the clinic's mission to deliver high-quality, affordable healthcare services with dignity and respect to underserved communities.
The Health Information Management Intern will work under the guidance of the Health Information Management Supervisor to gain practical experience and understanding of the Health Information Management team's role in a primary care environment. The intern will participate in tasks related to patient health information management, data handling, and support for patient registration and document processing.

Compensation: Unpaid Internship/University or Program Credit
Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the Health Information Management Supervisor, this individual's primary responsibilities include:
    โ€ข Learn and assist in organizing, overseeing, and safeguarding patient health information as directed by the HIM Supervisor.
    โ€ข Acquire knowledge and practical skills related to data management, medical records scanning, archiving, and filing.
    โ€ข Assist patients with registration forms and provide support to staff in processing medical charts and documents.
    โ€ข Adhere to patient confidentiality and HIPAA policies to ensure the privacy and security of patient data.

Qualifications
Education: Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program, preferably in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
Experience: No prior professional experience required; however, coursework or academic exposure to healthcare systems, medical records, or data management is beneficial.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
โ€ข Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel.
โ€ข Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
โ€ข Basic understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
โ€ข Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
โ€ข Enthusiasm for learning and a proactive approach to tasks.
โ€ข Ability to work collaboratively within a team
Preferred Qualifications:
โ€ข Relevant coursework or previous exposure to Health Information Management or healthcare operations.
โ€ข Experience in data entry, document management, or administrative roles.
โ€ข Understanding of electronic health records (EHR) systems.
โ€ข Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
Physical Requirements:
  • Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
  • Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
  • Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
  • Other: Requires occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted. Requires frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting, with some lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted throughout the regular workday.
