Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), the Director, People, Organizational Development and Change is responsible for the strategic direction of the People, Organizational Development and Change team within the Human Resources department, and works collaboratively with Human Resources and all client groups and leaders, to develop and drive an integrated people strategy to successfully attract, retain, develop, and advancing people that supports and enhances organizational capability, and fosters an inclusive workplace culture, building alignment between strategy, structure, practices, processes and systems needed for the College to reach its organization and strategic goals. The Director will direct, lead and execute the design, development, implementation, delivery and evaluation of College-wide talent management strategies, learning and team development and leadership programming. The incumbent will provide expertise, a framework, direction and process on enterprise-wide people-related change initiatives. This position acts as a coach to assist with performance, conflict resolution, relationship and team building. The position has budget responsibilities across the college including forecasting for learning and development, manages direct reports and has specific department policy oversight.
What you'll be doing:
Human Resource Leadership and Planning
- Actively participates as a member of the HR Leadership Team in providing leadership, planning and decision-making related to the HR functions of the college.
- Provides HR expert advice on various college-wide committees and to senior leadership on matters related to the portfolio.
- Leads and/or collaborates on HR projects and initiatives in support of college-wide plans and strategies.
Operational Leadership: Strategic Organization Development and Change Management
- Manages, directs, coaches and develops a team of OD professionals while partnering with subject matter experts, Human Resources and partners to develop learning initiatives or specific programs to support the College purpose and strategy.
- Working through strong relationships with the Mohawk Executive Group (MEG), the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and clients throughout the College, provides direction, and or consultative and advisory services in the identification and analysis of organizational development, change, organizational capacity and the development and implementation of customized organizational development initiatives, ensuring alignment with the college's strategic plan, vision and values.
- Develops and implements impactful organizational strategies and solutions using design thinking methodologies to address critical program and/or college-wide issues (e.g. talent and team management, key employee retention, succession planning and change management) and supports the college as a high-performing organization by supporting its ability to achieve the business goals.
- Develops and ensures the implementation of appropriate initiatives to improve organizational effectiveness by building individual and collective capacity and capabilities through an overarching learning strategy aligned to the organizational strategic vision and goals.
- Provides expertise, and defines a framework, direction and process on enterprise-wide people related change initiatives.
- Plans and prepares communications materials related to organization development, change and transition management.
- Designs and directs the development and implementation of College wide performance management programs and processes with focus on enhancing formal and informal feedback capabilities.
- Develops people metrics, benchmarking and analysis of data to assess the impact and effectiveness of programs and strategies.
Operational Leadership: Leadership Development and Coaching
- Identifies leadership competencies and capabilities and partners with others to embed them within all College systems.
- Partners with all levels of management and the HR team in the development of interventions to facilitate individual/team and/or organizational development programs to drive high performing teams.
- Utilizes assessment tools and/or performance management to identify leadership gaps and identifies frameworks, programs or initiatives to narrow the gap and identify future organizational leaders.
- Plans, develops and implements leadership development initiatives, utilizing a variety of learning program delivery methods to meet diverse needs of employees and provide experiential learning opportunities.
- As a trusted advisor, coaches leaders and employees using certified methodologies to develop client specific processes, tools and techniques for successful organization and leadership development and interventions related to complex issues such as conflict resolution, problem-solving, culture assessment and improving team dynamics as it relates to performance and creating high performing teams.
- Identifies and develops a talent succession strategy and process that can be effectively communicated and implemented throughout the entire organization.
- Develops and communicates tools and supports for managers and employees to assist in career development and succession planning.
Operational Leadership: Learning and Organizational Development
- Ensures the application of adult learning principles and best practices are applied for employee development aimed at supporting individual contributor, team and leadership growth and development.
- Directs the work for needs assessments to be completed using a variety of sources, such as employee feedback, performance data, and testing tools to identify gaps in training, skills and performance.
- Oversees the design, procurement and coordination of appropriate training based on identified needs.
- Guides the relationships with external training consultants as needed to ensure the delivery of appropriate training programs.
- Oversees the evaluation and analysis of training programs to ensure alignment with identified needs and organizational goals.
- Oversee the development, direction and administration of the college wide employee professional development policy.
Administration and Management
Leads and Manages Staff
- Plans, organizes, supervises and manages the People, Organizational Development and Change team of the Human Resources department including the full scope of managerial / supervisory responsibility within the employee life cycle i.e. mentoring and coaching; performance and project management; fosters learning and growth, promotes currency and continuous improvement, assigns and monitors tasks and ensures completion; sets work priorities; supports team development.
- Meets all supervisor obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and supports continuous improvement of health and safety and equity, diversity and inclusion at Mohawk.
Management of Financial and Physical Resources
- Accountable for budget and physical resource management, including efficiencies and optimization.
- Directs the planning, forecasting and accuracy of the College-wide Professional development budget.
Other Duties as Assigned, Including
- Participating on or coordinating College-wide committees and special projects as assigned.
- Represents the College at sector meetings as required.
What you'll bring to the role:
- A minimum of a Master's Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Organizational Leadership, Change Management, or a related field; or equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Designation as a Learning and Development Professional.
- Certification in Change Management preferred.
- Certificate or training in Executive Coaching, and Psychometric Assessment tools is highly desirable.
- A minimum of 7 years of related, progressive work experience, preferably in an educational and multi union setting.
- Well-developed knowledge and understanding of current thinking and future directions of organization development and trends in adult education and organization design.
- Experience in establishing/maintaining effective relationships and presenting to all levels of staff, including executives.
- Experience working with/facilitating cross-departmental groups.
- Planning and budgeting experience.
- Experience managing and directing a high-performance team of professionals.
- Excellent skills and/or training on Change Management and OD Principles and Techniques.
- Superb communication ability, both oral and written, with the capacity to deal with all levels of employees and staff, including executives and union representatives.
- Skilled at Problem Solving, Conflict resolution, Negotiations and Influence.
- Ability to facilitate groups and translate complex concepts into easily understood terms.
- Fully conversant in Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
