Job description
The QA/QC Manager is responsible for the overall quality assurance and quality control program on a large-scale, mission-critical data center construction project. This is a dedicated, full-time onsite role who partners closely with the Project Manager. The QA/QC Manager establishes and administers the project Quality Plan, oversees the QC Inspector(s) assigned to the site, and serves as the Company’s primary point of contact for quality matters with the owner, the owner’s representatives and construction managers, commissioning agent, and third-party/special inspectors. Given the zero-defect tolerance and rigorous commissioning process inherent to data center construction, this role requires an individual who can drive a culture of first-time right installation across all trades while maintaining complete, audit-ready documentation.
Key outcomes and objectives:- Zero-defect commissioning: installation quality supports first-pass success across Cx Levels 1-5, minimizing owner-driven rework and schedule impact.
- A fully audit-ready quality file [Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), material certifications, calibration records] maintained in real time and ready for owner, Commissioning Agent (CxA), or Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)] review at any point in the project.
- A functioning Hold Point/Witness Point system that prevents any work from being concealed or advanced without required inspection sign-off.
- Declining NCR trend and improving first-pass inspection rate over the life of the project, tracked and reported to leadership.
- A trained, high-performing QC Inspector Team producing consistent, defensible field documentation.
- Strong working relationship with the owner’s quality representative and CxA, positioning the Company as a trusted, low-risk partner for future mission-critical work
- Prioritizes safety as the utmost importance, even before production, and promotes a team culture that makes safety the primary focus for all employees at all times.
- Adheres to safety procedures in accordance with federal or state-specific OSHA statutes and regulations, in addition to all Company-specific and Client-required safety standards
- Fully understands and shares a passion for the Company’s core values, vision, mission, and objectives.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships as trusted advisors to our clients.
- Develops, implements, and maintains the project-specific Quality Management Plan (QMP), ITPs, and quality control procedures for all disciplines (structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and controls).
- Establishes and enforces Hold Points and Witness Points in coordination with the project schedule so no work is concealed or advanced without required inspection and sign-off.
- Directly supervises, trains, and assigns daily priorities to the onsite QC Inspector(s), reviewing their inspection reports and field findings each day.
- Serves as the primary liaison with the owner’s quality representative, the CxA, and any third-party or jurisdictional special inspectors; attends and leads weekly quality meetings.
- Owns the NCR process from end-to-end: identification, root cause analysis, corrective action planning, verification of resolution, and closure documentation.
- Reviews subcontractor quality control submittals, inspection and test plans, and material certifications for compliance with contract documents, codes, and manufacturer requirements.
- Partners with the CxA to prepare the site for Level 1-5 commissioning activities, ensuring installation quality supports first-pass commissioning success and minimizes costly rework.
- Maintains the master quality documentation system (inspection records, NCRs, punch lists, material certifications, calibration records, redlines) in a state that is audit-ready at all times and complete for turnover/closeout.
- Conducts periodic quality audits of subcontractor work practices and coordinates corrective training with Field Operations and Safety when systemic issues are identified.
- Possesses stop-work authority for quality-related concerns and escalates promptly to the Project Manager when work does not meet contract or code requirements.
- Tracks and reports quality metrics (NCR trends, first-pass inspection rates, punch list aging) to project leadership and executive leadership on a regular cadence.
- Supports procurement and field teams in resolving quality issues related to material substitutions, Requests for Information (RFIs), and design clarifications.
- EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- EXPERIENCE: Minimum 7 years of progressive quality control/quality assurance experience in commercial or industrial construction, with at least 3 years specific to mission-critical or data center projects strongly preferred.
- OTHER SKILLS: Working knowledge of Uptime Institute Tier classifications and hyperscale/colocation owner quality standards. Strong working knowledge of commissioning processes (Cx Levels 1-5). Demonstrated experience managing NCR and Corrective Action Request (CAR) processes and maintaining audit ready documentation for owner or third-party review. Proficiency with quality documentation and project management platforms (e.g., Procore, Smartsheet, PlanGrid, Fieldwire, or similar). Ability to maintain professionalism and promotes the Company’s core values. Strong observational and coaching skills to provide real-time feedback. Ability to work independently and take the initiative in delivering training and instruction. Excellent written communication skills; ability to produce clear, defensible inspection and NCR documentation. Willingness to relocate/live local to project site for the duration of the project assignment.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent structural steel inspection credential preferred given structural steel and PEMB scope.
- American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) a plus.
- OSHA 30 certification required.
- Must be able to receive instruction and supervision.
- Ability to perform work at elevations in excess of 30 feet.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to outdoor environments, including extreme weather conditions.
