English Instructor
Independence Community College (ICC) is seeking applications for the position of
English Instructor for its English department to start in August 2026. ICC is a rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas that is dedicated to continuous quality improvement and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Position Summary
The college is seeking a full-time tenure-track faculty member to teach courses offered by the English department. Composition instructors teach 30 credit hours or more per academic year of composition and literature courses.
Qualifications
A Master's Degree in English or appropriate equivalent degree is required.A minimum of thirty (30) upper division undergraduate credit hours in English courses and at least 18 credit hours of English at the graduate level is required. The applicant's degree must be from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.Preferred qualifications include three or more years of community college teaching experience, developmental teaching experience, and experience working with a diverse student body.
Position Information
This position will be paid in accordance with, and is eligible to be included, in the bargaining agreement between Independence Community College and the Independence Community College Faculty Association. Instructor affiliation with the ICC Faculty Association is voluntary.
Primary Responsibilities
Instruct students in English Composition using approved course outcome guides developed by college-wide subject area Faculty; assess student performance in these courses.
1. Provide classroom instruction to students for composition, developmental English and/or literature courses.
2. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to facilitate students' learning needs.
3. Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
4. Attend and participate in college-wide, campus/center division, department, and program meetings and activities.
5. Serve on Subject Area Curriculum Committees and/or such other College committees as may be assigned.
6. Attend in-service meetings.
7. Provide certification lists, and post student progress reports and grades on time, in conjunction with Registrar and Financial Aid requirements.
8. Comply with published College Policies and Procedures.
9. Perform other related duties, as applicable and as outlined in the Faculty Negotiated Agreement.

1. Assist in the recruitment of students.
2. Provide registration, advising, and guidance assistance to students.
3. Provide professional assistance to staff and students.
4. Compile and/or research data as may be assigned.

1. Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to (30) pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment. The job requires varying amounts of sitting, standing and walking.

3. The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people, with an excellent comprehension of the English language, is essential.
4. Work is generally performed in an indoor setting using a commonly used technology and resources to facilitate.

Interview Process
Finalist asked to interview with Independence Community College will be asked to grade a sample student essay, make a 15- to 30-minute presentation on writing and composition. Compensation: $45,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year

Independence Community College (ICC) is a two-year educational institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It was established in 1925 as grades 13 and 14 of the Independence public school system. In 1967, Independence Community College legally separated from the school district. Construction of the new community college on a 68 acre campus, formerly the Independence Country Club, began in 1969. Classes at the new site began in September 1970. ICC campus is now home to the Academic Building, Fine Arts Building, Student Union, Cessna Learning Center, Field House, Administration Building, , fitness center, athletic practice fields, disc golf course, 96-bed multi-structure living complex, and a 200 bed .
By renovating a donated building, in 2010, we expanded our college to include ICC West (2615 West Main Street). This campus is located on the west side of Independence and is home to our technical programs: Allied Health, Cosmetology, and GED/ABE. Additional renovations were completed in 2012 to accomodate our newest program, Veterinary Technology. This state-of-the-art facility includes animal wards, a classroom, lab, surgery, pharmacy, prep room, small animal treatment, food prep, grooming, and radiology.
ICC also maintains presence downtown through the ICC Foundation office and by partnering with the Independence Business Resource Center.
