Job Description
The Department of Radiology, a clinical department of the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), invites applications from highly qualified individuals with strong imaging-related and radiochemistry research interests for tenure-earning and tenured positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, and full Professor, based on experience and qualifications. Qualified candidates should hold a PhD and demonstrate a collaborative and leadership mindset. Applicants are expected to have a strong research vision, mentor trainees, and will support their program with NIH and other federal, foundation and/or industry support.
UAB Radiology has a rapidly expanding research program with strengths in molecular imaging and therapeutics, and robust infrastructure including TR24 cyclotron, GE TOF PET/MRI, GE Omni 32 PET/CT, and small animal PET/CT, SPECT/CT, MRI and other modalities. The department continues to invest strategically in imaging infrastructure to support the growth of its clinical, research, and translational programs. Current initiatives include finalizing agreements for the Omni Legend 128 and Omni Legend 24 cardiac PET systems, as well as the recent acquisition of the StarGuide SPECT/CT system. These investments enhance imaging capabilities, increase operational capacity, and strengthen the department's position as a leader in advanced molecular imaging. Candidates who join this exciting environment must be committed to developing a robust extramurally funded research program, teaching excellence at the graduate levels, and involvement in service activities to the University and the profession. We are seeking candidates that will provide scientific and strategic leadership for UAB's cyclotron facility and radiopharmaceutical production programs, supporting basic, translational, and clinical research across the institution. The Cyclotron Director will oversee radiochemistry operations, radiopharmaceutical development and production, regulatory compliance, facility personnel, and infrastructure planning while fostering collaborations across UAB's research and clinical communities. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to collaborate with colleagues and participate in ongoing departmental programs. Candidates should have demonstrated a strong track record of research with an interest in enhancing the research and teaching experiences of our undergraduate and graduate students.
Positions require an earned doctoral degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, or related field. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must be nationally recognized for their research. Tenure-eligible candidates must have an outstanding vision for independent research. Salary is commensurate with the individual's experience.
The department fosters strong collaborative interactions with the School of Medicine, School of Engineering, UAB College of Arts and Sciences (Department of Chemistry), UAB hospital, O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, Alzheimer's' Disease Research Center (ADRC), and American Parkinson Disease Association Center for Advanced Research, all of which are located right in the heart of Birmingham. UAB Hospital main campus is the 5th largest hospital in the United States. The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of 51 NCI-designated cancer centers in the nation with more than 400 scientists and physician-scientists working on groundbreaking discoveries in basic science and clinical cancer. UAB Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) is a prestigious National Institute on Aging (NIA)-designated center dedicated to improving dementia care and advancing research in the Deep South. The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) is a nationwide grassroots network dedicated to fighting Parkinson's disease (PD) - UAB is of one nine APDA centers in the US.
