Position Summary Information
General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Transition Academic Coaches, the Tutor will assist college students looking for assistance with related assignments/classes. Tutors work in both face-to-face and online sessions. All tutors receive paid training. Subjects needed include math, science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.), as well as business, computer/information technology, and health sciences. Specify your area of expertise in your cover letter. This is a part-time temporary position.
Essential Functions
1. Provide Tutoring in Writing and Reading
The Writing Tutor will provide coaching to any SCC student or staff member on any type of reading or writing assignment or task. Tutors will follow best-practices based on current tutor/writing center theory. Tutoring sessions will be held on the Lincoln Campus and online using SCC's custom Smarthinking online tutoring platform.
2. Promote a positive and welcoming learning and working environment
Writing/Reading tutors will follow all established Writing Center and Tutoring and Learning Center protocols, assist in the enforcing of Tutoring and Learning Center policies, interact with students in a positive and encouraging manner, and interact with colleagues in a professional and cooperative manner.
3. Maintain records and timesheets
Writing/Reading tutors will maintain all necessary records documenting student sessions and record and submit accurate web time entry in a timely manner.
4. Promote/Support the Organizational Environment through Goal 9 of the Strategic Plan: Promote and support the College's organizational environment goals. Maximize operational efficiency by enhancing policies and procedures, staffing, and communication processes and practices. Enhance positive communication processes and practices, and maximize a positive and engaging organizational environment by encouraging input, reflective and transparent communication, and compassion and respect toward the views and ideas of others.
Marginal Functions
1. Assist with keeping the Writing Center clean and orderly.
2. Cooperate with the Director of Transitions and Tutoring and the Tutor Center Coordinator.
3. Provide information to assist with the building of term schedules in a timely manner.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of or willingness to learn theory-based best practices in tutoring and writing center theory.
2. Strong technology skills and a willingness to do asynchronous online tutoring.
3. Strong oral and written communication skills.
4. Good personal hygiene.
5. The ability to arrive for a shift on time and appropriately notify and make arrangements if shifts will be missed.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Recommendation/reference from an instructor or graduate school advisor or previous tutoring experience.
  2. Completed intended courses to tutor with a B or higher.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Tutoring or mentoring experience.
  2. Familiarity with community colleges and community college students.
