What is a professional listener?

A Professional Listener is someone who provides a safe, nonjudgmental space for others to talk and be heard. They actively listen, offer emotional support, and help people process their thoughts without giving advice or therapy. This role is often sought by those who need to express themselves without fear of criticism. It can be used in personal, professional, or emotional contexts. Professional Listeners may work independently or through listening services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional listener?

To excel as a Professional Listener, one needs exceptional active listening abilities, strong interpersonal communication skills, and often a background in counseling, psychology, or social work. Familiarity with case management databases, note-taking tools, and sometimes certification in mental health first aid or peer support training are commonly beneficial. High emotional intelligence, patience, and the ability to maintain confidentiality help individuals stand out in this position. These skills ensure trust-building, effective support, and ethical practice while managing sensitive conversations.

What are some of the common challenges faced by professional listeners, and how are they typically addressed?

A common challenge for Professional Listeners is managing emotional fatigue or compassion fatigue, as the role involves regularly hearing about clients' stressful or distressing experiences. To address this, many organizations offer regular supervision, peer support groups, and access to mental health resources to support the listener’s well-being. Another challenge is maintaining clear boundaries and professionalism, for which ongoing training and adherence to established protocols are crucial. Emphasizing self-care and setting realistic expectations helps Professional Listeners sustain their effectiveness and avoid burnout in this rewarding but emotionally demanding role.

How much do professional listeners make?

Professional listeners typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, depending on the employer, location, and experience. Some roles may offer fixed salaries or freelance opportunities with variable pay rates, often requiring strong communication skills and active listening abilities.

About the Organization

Heart & Listen Clinical Counseling is a leading provider of telehealth mental health services, located in Parsippany, New Jersey. • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and records, adhering strictly to ethical and legal standards in counseling practices.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training, participating in workshops to stay current with advancements in mental health research and treatment methodologies.
Patient Population / Client Focus

Your primary focus will be on individuals and families who often have limited access to quality mental health services. This includes working with clients facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, substance misuse, and relationship issues. You will create a safe and welcoming environment for diverse clients, adjusting your approach to meet their unique needs and experiences.

Qualifications
  • A Master's or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related field is mandatory.
  • Valid and unrestricted licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey.
  • A minimum of two years of counseling experience is required, ideally in a clinical setting.
  • Strong understanding of ethical practices and legal requirements within the counseling profession.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills to build rapport with clients from various backgrounds.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience or specialization in family therapy, couples therapy, trauma-informed care, or substance misuse treatment is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting within the healthcare spectrum.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) software and other telehealth technology platforms.
Compensation and Benefits

This full-time position offers a competitive annual salary ranging from USD 70,000 to 90,000, commensurate with your experience and caseload. Additional benefits include:

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans.
  • Malpractice insurance coverage.
  • Access to numerous client referrals, helping to build your practice.
  • Support with billing and documentation to minimize administrative workload and maximize client engagement.
  • A significant sign-on bonus for qualified applicants, details to be provided during the interview process.
