What is professional learning?

Professional learning refers to ongoing education and development activities that help individuals improve their skills, knowledge, and effectiveness in their careers. It often involves workshops, seminars, courses, or collaborative learning experiences designed to keep professionals up-to-date with the latest trends, research, and best practices in their field. Professional learning is essential for career growth, adaptability, and maintaining high standards of practice.

How do professionals in a professional learning role typically collaborate with educators and administrators to implement new training initiatives?

Professionals in a Professional Learning role often work closely with teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators to design and deliver effective training programs. They typically assess the needs of staff, tailor professional development sessions to address those needs, and provide ongoing support through workshops, coaching, or feedback sessions. Collaboration is key, as these professionals facilitate open communication, gather input, and ensure that training aligns with school or district goals. This partnership-driven approach helps build trust and ensures that professional learning initiatives are both relevant and sustainable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional learning specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Learning Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, adult learning theory, and a background in education or training, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), virtual training platforms, and assessment tools is typically required. Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills help engage adult learners and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies ensure effective knowledge transfer, engagement, and measurable learning outcomes in professional development settings.

Job description

Learning Experience Designer
Saxbys | Philadelphia, PA (Hybrid) | $70,000/year + annual bonus + benefits

Make Life Better - for the students who lead our cafes.

Saxbys isn't just a coffee company. We're an experiential learning platform disguised as a cafe - where college students run the show as Student CEOs, and every cup poured is part of their leadership development. We're looking for a Learning & Development Business Partner to help build the training that makes that possible.

Job Summary: The Learning Experience Designer supports the Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform (ELP) by building and maintaining the training that prepares student team members and leaders to succeed in the cafe. This role works under the direction of the Director of L&D and in close partnership with Operations Implementation to assess training needs across cafe roles, close content gaps, and keep training and compliance content current. The role also manages the day-to-day grading, enrollment, and reporting for the Saxbys ELP, and supports HQ learning initiatives as capacity allows.

What You Will Own

  • Cafe Training & Compliance Content: Partner closely with subject matter experts to identify content gaps and update existing cafe training materials and compliance content (Fair Workweek, DOH, food safety) to produce multimodal, engaging online learning experiences.
  • ELP Learning Experience Ownership: Manage, update, and maintain all content within the Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform - including the Experiential Learning Microcredentials (Badge Courses), Student VP onboarding courses, and the Student CEO Badge Course - to reflect new expectations and processes, and design interactive, multimodal, high-quality learning experiences for student leaders.
  • Assessment, Enrollment & Reporting: Grade student submissions, process enrollments, and run recurring reports for department leads. Analyze learning experience survey results and identify opportunities to enhance content and delivery.
  • HQ Learning Support: Support additional HQ learning initiatives as time and capacity allow, including role-specific onboarding training, systems rollouts, and professional development / managerial training across synchronous and asynchronous formats.

Who You Will Support

  • Operations Implementation: Serve as the embedded L&D business partner to the Operations team, translating operational priorities into cafe training content and compliance updates.
  • Director of Cafe Operations: Partner closely to identify content gaps, validate accuracy, and keep cafe training aligned with current operating procedures.
  • Student CEOs and Student VPs: Maintain and evolve the Experiential Learning Platform content, assessments, and submission environments that support their leadership development.
  • Director of Learning & Development: Execute against the broader enterprise learning strategy, escalating content or resourcing needs and contributing data and insights from cafe-level and ELP programming.
  • HQ Departments: Provide additional L&D support - as time and capacity allow - for onboarding, systems rollouts, and professional development initiatives.

Who You Will Supervise

This position does not currently have direct reports.

What Success Looks Like

  • Cafe training content for Levels 1-4 is accurate, current, and free of compliance gaps
  • Learning experience surveys show 85%+ satisfaction across cafe and ELP training programs
  • Enrollments, grading, and Canvas administration are processed accurately and on schedule with no backlog
  • Department leads receive timely, accurate reporting on training completion and student performance
  • Experiential Learning Platform content - including Badge Courses, assessments, and capstone materials - reflects current expectations and processes each term

Where You Excel

  • Instructional Design & Curriculum Development (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration with Subject Matter Experts
  • Data-Informed Program Improvement
  • Organization, Follow-Through, and Attention to Detail
  • Multimodal, Interactive Content Creation (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Learning Management System Administration

What You Have Done

  • 2-4 years of experience in learning & development, instructional design, training, or a related field
  • BA/BS required
  • Experience designing multimodal training content, including interactive, video-based, and written formats
  • Experience administering a learning management system (Canvas, ADP, Cornerstone, Workday, or similar)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Google Suite, Canva, Articulate 360 Suite, or comparable learning design tools
  • Shown curiosity and appetite for learning across domains, including operations

What is Required

  • Stay current on best practices in experiential learning, talent development, learning design, and adult education
  • Maintain an enthusiasm for educating and mentoring college-age students and early-career professionals
