Hunter College’s Office of AccessABILITY is seeking a part-time Disability Accommodation Specialist – Advising (Level 2) to help students access the accommodations, resources, and guidance they need to achieve their academic and career goals.

About the Role

The Disability Accommodation Specialist is a regular, part-time, on-site position within the Office of AccessABILITY at Hunter College in New York City. The Specialist will coordinate disability-related advising and accommodations in accordance with applicable laws, CUNY policies, and recognized accessibility practices.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conducting individual intake interviews, needs assessments, and evaluations for students with disabilities
• Reviewing disability documentation and prior records to determine appropriate reasonable accommodations or the need for further evaluation
• Developing individualized educational and accommodation plans that help students reach their full academic potential
• Identifying appropriate learning strategies, compensatory techniques, assistive technology, and remedial services
• Maintaining a caseload and accurate, confidential student records
• Providing individual and group advising related to academic, career, personal, and social development
• Assisting students with course review, program requirements, academic goals, and educational planning
• Monitoring academic performance, behavior, and attendance and helping coordinate appropriate interventions
• Maintaining communication with medical professionals when clarification regarding a student’s disability or accommodations is needed
• Helping faculty and staff implement accommodations in classrooms and testing environments
• Addressing access concerns involving instruction, testing, programs, services, and campus facilities
• Providing advocacy, referrals, follow-up support, and information about disability-related resources
• Using student data and assessment procedures to structure services, prepare reports, and identify opportunities for program improvement
• Delivering trainings and informational sessions and collaborating with campus departments to advance accessibility and inclusion
• Participating in professional development and adhering to the policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the Office of AccessABILITY

Qualifications

Candidates must have:

• A Master’s degree from an accredited institution and four years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Knowledge of disabilities, their functional impacts, and the reasonable accommodation process
• Experience with case or claims management, preferably involving educational or workplace accommodations
• Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and collaborative communication skills
• Familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504, and accessibility and inclusion practices
• The ability to handle confidential information with discretion and maintain accurate, well-organized records
• Strong assessment, problem-solving, data interpretation, and report-writing skills
• Cultural competency and a demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful engagement with people from varied backgrounds

A degree in social work, rehabilitation counseling, psychology, education, or a closely related field is preferred. An advanced degree and experience in higher education—or in an advisory, counseling, or advocacy role serving people with disabilities—are highly beneficial.
