They plan and execute fundraising campaigns, events, and donor outreach strategies to meet financial goals. Their responsibilities often include identifying potential donors, writing grant proposals, managing relationships with supporters, and ensuring that fundraising activities comply with relevant laws and regulations. Professional fundraisers may work directly for an organization or as consultants providing specialized services. Their work is crucial to securing the resources needed for various causes and initiatives.

What are some common challenges professional fundraisers face when cultivating long-term donor relationships?

Professional Fundraisers often encounter challenges such as donor fatigue, increased competition for charitable dollars, and maintaining consistent communication without overwhelming supporters. Building trust and demonstrating the impact of donations are crucial for sustaining engagement. Successful fundraisers use personalized outreach and strong storytelling to foster deeper connections and retain donor loyalty over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional fundraiser, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Fundraiser, you need strong communication, relationship-building, and project management skills, often supported by a background in nonprofit management, marketing, or related fields. Familiarity with donor management systems (CRMs), fundraising platforms, and relevant certifications like the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) are valuable. Persuasion, resilience, and the ability to connect authentically with diverse stakeholders help set exceptional fundraisers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for building sustainable donor relationships and achieving fundraising goals that support organizational missions.

Job description

**POSITION DESCRIPTION**

THE PEW CHARITABLE TRUSTS

Officer, Partnerships, (Fundraising)

Partnerships

The Partnerships team works to scale Pew's impact in the world by building an engaged community of partners and mobilizing resources to advance our vital work.

Position Overview

Do you have a passion for building meaningful relationships and mobilizing resources to create positive societal impact? As an officer on Pew's Partnerships team, you'll be at the forefront of building fundraising and partnership support for three key programmatic areas: Government Performance (GP), Philadelphia projects, and Scientific Advancement (GPS). These areas have been strategically combined due to their overlapping agendas and interdependencies, creating a portfolio that promotes cross-promotion with current and prospective donors.

Under the guidance of the team director, you'll establish relationships both internally and externally, using metrics and ROI to meet key programmatic deliverables. To be successful, you'll need to have strong relationship-building skills, be adept at setting priorities and anticipating needs, have the discretion to handle confidential information, and the ability to quickly learn Pew and Partnerships' systems. As you become knowledgeable in all facets of Partnerships, you'll lead and support ongoing and special projects between your focus area and Partnerships more broadly as needed. Your responsibilities will evolve in line with Partnerships' and the institution's growth and needs.

This position is based in Pew's Washington, DC office, reports to the director, Partnerships, GPS, and will participate in Pew's hybrid work program with core days in the office and the flexibility to telework the remaining days. Staff also enjoy four telework "flex weeks" per year.

Responsibilities
  • Execute an assigned portfolio of fundraising prospects to identify areas of philanthropic and partnerships support for the needs of GPS.
  • Set a primary goal to develop deep relationships with the GP, Philadelphia and Scientific Advancement program teams, gaining credibility and a personal affinity for the work being conducted.
  • Work in conjunction with program staff to understand and translate the value proposition of the work to external audiences.
  • Guided by the scope of prospects' interests, collaborate with, and refer prospects across the full organization to leverage the maximum philanthropic potential of prospects.
  • Work collaboratively with resource mobilization colleagues who are also responsible for portfolio execution, identifying best practices while suggesting process improvements for the benefit of the overall team.
  • Lead the development of written proposals, concept papers, fundraising plans, and the other materials needed to creatively deepen prospect engagement for securing gifts.
  • In coordination with Donor Relations officer, develop and execute comprehensive and creative donor stewardship plans for portfolio.
  • Collaborate closely with Prospect Research and Portfolio Management colleagues to identify, assess, and drive opportunities, and to refine your portfolio.
  • Participate fully in Pew's Salesforce constituent relationship management and PeopleSoft financial systems, collaborating with analytics and administrative team members.
  • Be meticulous in prospect reporting and tracking relationships in the CRM utilized by the team.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, is required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Generally, eight years of successful fundraising experience, with a demonstrated track record of closing significant investments and philanthropy through creative, entrepreneurial and sophisticated relationship building.
  • Discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.
  • Commitment to embody, practice, and develop growth mindset skill sets in work and interactions.
  • Documented success personally implementing sophisticated cultivation strategies leading to successful closure of six and seven figure gifts.
  • A strong commitment to producing measurable results combined with creativity in problem solving.
  • Exemplary verbal, written, and editing skills, including the capacity to understand and translate Pew's mission and interests for donors and prospects with clarity, crispness, and effectiveness.
  • Experience developing complex written materials in a short period of time.
  • A commitment to working in a deadline-driven, collaborative environment with respect for accountability and responsibility.
  • Sound judgment and integrity; willingness to try new approaches; and enthusiasm, and dedication to the mission and objectives of the institution.
  • Experience setting short-and long-term planning goals in line with program priorities.
  • Highly organized with experience handling multiple projects while maintaining clarity of focus and flexibility in the face of organizational change and ambiguity.
  • Proven research and analytic skills, with the capacity to investigate an issue, ask thoughtful questions and recommend possible solutions.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of software (Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and the ability to learn technology used at Pew, including Salesforce and PeopleSoft if not already familiar.
