Reports To: Field Operations Manager / Grounds Superintendent (Head Groundskeeper)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/ Part time

Position Summary:

The Grounds Crew Member is a seasonal, part-time position responsible for supporting the preparation, maintenance, and game-day readiness of the playing surface at ONT Field. Working under the direction of the Field Operations Manager and Grounds Superintendent, this hands-on role assists with turf care, infield clay maintenance, batting practice setup, weather response, and event conversions to ensure a safe, professional quality playing surface for baseball games and special events. This role is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on experience in sports turf management, baseball operations, or stadium field operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Field Preparation & Maintenance

  • Assist with daily baseball field preparation including infield dragging, edging, mowing, watering, and moisture management of clay and turf areas.
  • Maintain, repair, and condition the pitcher's mound, home plate, bullpen areas, infield skin, and warning track under supervision.
  • Assist with batting practice setup and breakdown.
  • Chalk and paint field markings in accordance with PDL standards.
  • Perform postgame field repair including raking, leveling, divot repair, and debris removal.
  • Complete tasks assigned during games such as minor repairs, general housekeeping, or event

Game-Day & Event Support

  • Assist with pregame setup including base installation, chalking foul lines, setting batter's boxes, and positioning field equipment.
  • Support batting practice setup and field transitions.
  • Provide postgame repairs including raking, leveling, clay patching, and turf restoration.
  • Support on-field operations during baseball games, practices, and workouts.
  • Assist with setup and teardown for non-baseball events including concerts, corporate events, and community activities.
  • Transport tools and materials across the field using carts and utility vehicles.

Tarp & Weather Response

  • Serve as part of the tarp crew during rain delays, including deploying and removing full-field tarps.
  • Use drying agents, squeegees, and other tools to restore field playability after weather events.
  • Assist with mound/plate tarp placement for daily protection.

Collaboration, Safety & Communication

  • Work collaboratively as part of the grounds crew to execute daily operational tasks.
  • Follow all safety protocols when operating equipment and handling materials.
  • Report field conditions, safety concerns, or equipment malfunctions promptly to supervisors.

Inventory & Materials Management

  • Assist with stocking field supplies (chalk, clay, conditioners, fertilizer, drying agents, etc.).
  • Help maintain organized storage for field operations materials.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate field maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, sand pros, rollers, aerators, and utility vehicles (training provided).
  • Assist with cleaning, organizing, and maintaining tools, equipment, and work areas including the shop, ramp, and storage spaces.
Qualifications:

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Prior experience in sports turf, landscaping, construction, or facility operations preferred but not required.

Familiarity with baseball or athletic field maintenance is a plus.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to operate or learn to operate motorized equipment.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and able to follow instructions.
  • Strong work ethic and team-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks.

Schedule Requirements

  • Must be available on game days, including nights, weekends, and holidays (March - September)

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Tasks are performed with moderate supervision without assistance for 40% of the workday; tamping, stooping, bending and lifting at least 75 lbs. Walking for long distances for more than 50% of workday. This position may require work inside or outside of the building, as needed by events.
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, in addition to normal business hours. Employees may be scheduled to work until 12:00am or later. Must be able to pass background.
