Professional Ate Test Engineer information

What is a professional ATE test engineer?

Professional ATE Test Engineers are specialists who design, develop, and implement Automated Test Equipment (ATE) systems used to test semiconductors, electronic components, or assemblies. They are responsible for creating test programs, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and ensuring that products meet quality and functionality standards before release. Their work is critical in industries like electronics manufacturing, where precise and efficient testing ensures product reliability. Typical tasks include test plan development, data analysis, and collaborating with design and manufacturing teams to optimize test coverage and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional ATE test engineer?

To thrive as a Professional ATE Test Engineer, you need a strong background in electronics, circuit analysis, and test engineering, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with ATE platforms (such as Teradyne, Advantest, or Keysight), programming languages (like C/C++ or Python), and experience with test automation tools are essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and tools are crucial to ensuring efficient, accurate testing and quality assurance of complex electronic systems in high-reliability industries.

How does a professional ATE test engineer typically collaborate with design and manufacturing teams during product development?

As a Professional ATE (Automated Test Equipment) Test Engineer, collaboration with both design and manufacturing teams is essential for ensuring that test strategies align with product specifications and production capabilities. Early in the development cycle, you'll work closely with design engineers to understand product requirements and develop test plans that accurately validate performance. During manufacturing ramp-up, you partner with production teams to troubleshoot test failures, optimize test programs, and implement continuous improvements. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial to resolving issues quickly and ensuring high product quality.

What is the difference between Professional Ate Test Engineer vs Software Test Engineer?

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.
At AMD, we believe technology has the power to solve the world's most important challenges. From advancing healthcare and scientific discovery to powering AI and the technologies people rely on every day, innovation at AMD is shaping the future.
Whether you're designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or bringing leading edge products to market, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger - technology that moves the world forward. Join us and, together, we'll advance your career.
THE ROLE:
Join a results-oriented Test Engineering team where you'll have a direct impact on the quality, cost, and time-to-market of AMD microprocessors. You'll work across the product lifecycle, from understanding pre-silicon product features and developing characterization test plans to identifying coverage gaps and building the software and hardware infrastructure needed for execution. You'll collaborate closely with Design and Platform Engineering teams, with opportunities to influence future test strategies and product improvements.
Post-silicon, you'll tackle complex microprocessor debug and characterization challenges involving silicon performance, yield, manufacturing processes, and device marginalities. Working across engineering teams, you'll drive root-cause analysis, contribute to datasheet specifications, and identify improvements that enhance product performance, quality, and yield.
THE PERSON:
This position requires accountability for the quality and timeliness of outcomes within assigned projects or processes. The ideal candidate demonstrates problem-solving abilities through standard engineering methodologies and exercises independent judgment in complex technical decisions. Responsibilities include design and equivalent tasks within defined project scopes, covering test planning, creation, characterization, data analysis, and silicon debug for advanced process technologies.
Key duties include the development and debugging of Automated Test Equipment (ATE) test patterns and flows, ensuring device testability and manufacturability from development through production phases, and implementing product improvement measures to reduce cost, increase yield, and resolve quality issues.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Deliver innovative product test solutions consisting of hardware, software, and test content to achieve cost and quality requirements of the product.
  • Complete post-silicon characterization, product definition, and performance optimization, and enable the internal validation team and external customers through the delivery of prototype samples.
  • Optimize the overall product cost structure to maximize AMD profitability. This can include, but is not limited to, optimization of product yield, test hardware costs, and test costs.
  • Collaborate with hardware design engineers and other development teams to establish specifications for infrastructure required to support production test and debug.
  • Participate in the cross-discipline design process, working with Product, Design, and HWI (Hardware Infrastructure) team members to develop optimized integrated solutions.
  • Identify thermal and electrical design requirements for SoC products and develop and optimize test programs to enable operation across the manufacturing process window.
  • Collect and analyze data to facilitate engineering decisions during silicon hardware development.
  • Validate ATE hardware and software systems to ensure they meet program objectives and troubleshoot and root cause issues.
  • Work with internal teams and external partners/customers to define and release an optimal mix of SoC product variants to meet customer needs while achieving internal manufacturing and cost requirements.
  • Mentor team members from both a technical and leadership perspective to grow the next generation of technical leadership within AMD.
  • Develop scalable infrastructure, automation, and standardization for multiple product lines.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Hands-on ATE (Automatic Test Equipment) test experience; Advantest V93K SMT8 experience preferred.
  • Experience with SCAN, BIST, and functional ATE test pattern debug and characterization.
  • Unix and Windows proficiency.
  • Experience with AI and developing skills/agents.
  • Transferable experience in semiconductors, requiring some combination of expertise in semiconductor design, architecture, product test, product engineering, semiconductor physics, and/or semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Deep semiconductor testing expertise and subject matter expertise.
  • Computer architecture experience, especially GPU architecture or x86 architecture.
  • Silicon performance optimization techniques, especially those pertaining to power optimization, frequency maximization, and advanced performance management techniques.
  • Experience developing Load Boards and Probe Cards.
  • Knowledge of one or more scripting languages, such as Python.
  • Practical experience in the development and deployment of AI/ML solutions for continuous improvement.
  • Expertise with common development tools such as Git, VS Code, and Bash.
  • Basic understanding of test pattern conversion methodology and tools.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, including data presentation.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
