What is production touring?

Production touring refers to the process of organizing and executing the technical and logistical aspects of live performances, such as concerts, theater shows, or events, as they travel from one location to another. This role involves managing equipment, coordinating transportation, setting up and breaking down stages, and ensuring that each show runs smoothly. Production touring professionals work closely with artists, crew members, and venue staff to deliver a consistent and high-quality experience at each stop on the tour. Their responsibilities can include everything from lighting and sound to stage design and overall event logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in production touring, and why are they important?

To thrive in Production Touring, you need a strong understanding of live event logistics, audio/visual setup, and stage management, often supported by experience in event production or technical theater. Familiarity with equipment such as lighting consoles, soundboards, and production management software is essential, and certifications like OSHA or rigging credentials are valuable. Exceptional problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help manage fast-paced changes and coordinate effectively with diverse teams. These skills ensure smooth, safe, and successful live events while meeting the demanding schedules and high standards of touring productions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in production touring, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in production touring often encounter challenges such as tight travel schedules, last-minute technical issues, and adapting to different venues with varying resources. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, adaptability, and close communication with team members across departments such as logistics, audio/visual, and artist management. Building a reliable network, maintaining detailed checklists, and staying flexible are key strategies to ensure smooth tour operations and minimize disruptions.
