Job description

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Located at our Cottage Grove office, the Production Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring the timely completion of customer orders. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

Performance:
The Production Supervisor is responsible for the overall safety of their team, quality of incoming and outgoing products, on-time delivery of internal work or customer orders and optimization of all costs associated within the operation.  The Production Supervisor will be responsible for knowing how each of these are performing on a daily, weekly, and monthly level. They will own the system of capturing performance information along with leading the team to develop robust and sustainable corrective action.  The following are details into each area:

Safety- The Production Supervisor owns each and every safety event along with the culture of safe behaviors.  Following are the Production Supervisor responsibilities:

  • Communicate and report out performance with the Operations Manager daily
  • In the event of a safety incident (recordable or not), ensure the proper action is being taken to address employee wellbeing. Details will be communicated at department standup meetings
  • Each operation within the department has a documented Job Safety Analysis
  • Execute strategies to improve department safety performance. Execute metrics, paretos and actions to support these strategies and communicate with upper management

Quality- The Production Supervisor is responsible for the overall quality of finished product along with addressing internal defects that impact the operation.  Following are the Production Supervisors responsibilities:

  • Communicate and report out performance with the Operations Manager daily
  • Make sure each operation within the department has documented cyclical and non-cyclical standard work
  • Track and trend all internal incoming quality defects and address these with supplying departments/leaders. Have knowledge of this daily and communicate at department standup meetings with team.
  • Understand all external customer defects and support corrective action planning
  • Execute strategies to improve department DPPT (defective parts per thousand) performance. Execute metrics, paretos and actions to support these strategies and communicate with upper management

Delivery- The Production Supervisor is knowledgeable of daily production schedules and develops daily strategies to meet all internal and customer deliveries.  Following are the Production Supervisor's responsibilities:

  • Communicate and report out performance with the Operations Manager daily
  • Understand daily customer demand, execute strategies to complete daily schedules and communicate expectations to all direct reports.
  • Have knowledge of daily schedule execution and communicate at department standup meetings
  • Prepare staffing plans every day and align with the Operations Manager on training plans, staffing recommendations and strategies to accomplish daily schedules
  • Execute strategies to improve department on time delivery performance. Execute metrics, paretos and actions to support these strategies and communicate with upper management

Cost- The Production Supervisor is responsible for controlling direct and variable costs within their department.  The direct focus will be on labor performance to standard and scrap performance.  Following are the Production Supervisors responsibilities:

  • Communicate and report out performance with the Operations Manager daily
  • Understand daily scrap performance by work cell, have detailed root cause and corrective action and communicate out at the department standup meetings
  • Understand controllable costs through deep dives with the Operations Manager and develop strategies to reduce unnecessary spending
  • Understand inventory accuracy and cycle count accuracy of each storeroom and communicate out at department standup meetings.
  • Execute strategies to improve department cost performance. Execute metrics, paretos and actions to support these strategies and communicate with upper management

People:

The Production Supervisor is responsible for the overall culture of their team.  This means that they will lead by example and have high expectations for how we interact with each other and the ways in which we work together.  The Production Supervisor will be responsible for knowing the culture of the team on a daily basis and will own the system of capturing improvement plans along with leading the team to develop robust and sustainable corrective action.  The following are details into each area:

Communication- Communication is the most important part of developing the desired habits of a shop culture.  When, what, why and how should all be part of the Production Supervisors strategy to communicate with their team.  Following are the Production Supervisors responsibilities:

  • Execute a daily communication process to highlight prior day performance (SQDC) to team members
  • Take the lead on communicating company policies, key events and general information that is critical for Employee Owners to know what is happening in the life of Lumbermen's

Development- The Production Supervisor balances development of self and their teams.  They should have documented personal action plans that are aligned with the Operations Manager and meets the growth needs.  The same goes for all Employee Owners.  Following are the Production Supervisors responsibilities

  • Develop a personal accountability system to house completed, open and future action plans for future personal development. Meet with the Operations Manager (at least monthly) to discuss progress and support needed
  • Support the process development, communication and evolution of team member roles (shop floor and office) by coaching individuals to understand the business and own it
  • Be an influential leader that develops peers and others within the department by showing integrity, character in the face of adversity, ways to effectively problem solve and participate in actions that promote improved business results

KEY QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma/GED required
  • Prior woodworking would be considered a plus; router, miter saws, table saws
  • Prior cabinet manufacturing or trim carpentry work would be considered a plus
  • Knowledge of exterior doors desired
