Project Manager - Steel Design & Engineering

NexGen Steel – Salt Lake City, UT
Full-Time | remote
Salary: $65,000 – $95,000 per year

About the Role

NexGen Steel is experiencing rapid growth, and we are expanding our Project Management team to support an increasing volume of design-to-production projects. This role is critical to ensuring each project flows smoothly from initial design deposit through engineering, production, and final delivery to the client.

Our Project Managers serve as the central hub of communication, coordination, and accountability across clients, design teams, and internal operations. Each Project Manager is responsible for managing several projects at a time, ensuring quality, timeliness, and client satisfaction at every stage.

This position requires someone who can bridge the gap between clients, design teams, engineering, and production. The ideal candidate is comfortable reviewing construction plans, identifying missing information or inconsistencies, and facilitating technical discussions that keep projects moving efficiently from concept through manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Ownership
    • Oversee projects end-to-end, from initial design deposit through final delivery to the client
    • Manage a pipeline of concurrent projects with strong attention to timelines and detail
  • Design & Engineering Coordination
    • Receive and review client design plans for completeness and feasibility
    • Submit plans to assigned engineering/design teams for steel conversion
    • Act as the primary liaison between clients, design teams, and engineering throughout the project lifecycle
    • Identify missing information, inconsistencies, constructability concerns, and potential conflicts within plans before they impact production.
    • Coordinate technical questions between clients, designers, and engineers to ensure accurate and efficient project execution.
    • Ensure all questions, revisions, and clarifications are communicated and resolved efficiently between the client and the engineering team
  • Blueprint & Technical Review
    • Review and interpret architectural, structural, and framing plans
    • Analyze project documents to verify completeness, constructability, and compatibility with cold-formed steel framing.
    • Identify gaps, discrepancies, or design conflicts and work with clients and engineering teams to resolve them.
    • Clearly communicate technical information to both clients and internal teams.
    • Ensure project specifications align with company capabilities and production requirements.
  • Project Tracking & Milestones
    • Track progress across all phases of the design process
    • Ensure design milestones and deadlines are consistently met
    • Identify and proactively resolve delays or bottlenecks
  • Documentation & Communication
    • Maintain highly organized project files, notes, and communication records
    • Ensure clear documentation of all revisions, approvals, and decisions
  • Cross-Functional Coordination
    • Partner with internal production and operations teams to ensure smooth project handoff after design approval
    • Align project timelines with production capacity and delivery expectations

What Success Looks Like

  • Projects move efficiently from design to production with minimal delays
  • Clear, consistent communication across clients, engineers, and internal teams
  • High accuracy in design interpretation and documentation
  • Strong client satisfaction and confidence in project execution
  • Ability to manage multiple projects without sacrificing quality or timelines

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of Project Management experience (construction, manufacturing, or design-related industries preferred)
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints (architectural, structural, or framing plans)
  • Ability to confidently discuss project plans with clients, identify potential issues, and coordinate solutions with design and engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of construction documents and detailing workflows.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to recognize inconsistencies before they become production issues.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Exceptional communication and follow-through
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience coordinating with external vendors or teams is highly preferred

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) framing systems.
  • Experience reading or producing architectural, structural, or framing plans.
  • Experience in drafting, architectural design, detailing, or steel design.
  • Familiarity with Scottsdale roll forming equipment is a plus.
  • Experience using ScottSteel CAD software is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with CAD drawings and design workflows.
  • Experience coordinating with engineering and design teams.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and production processes.
  • Experience working with offshore or remote design teams is a plus.
  • Background in construction, steel framing, engineering, or architectural design
  • Familiarity with CAD drawings and design workflows

Compensation

  • Salary $65,000 - $95,000 per year (depending on experience)
  • Opportunities for career advancement as NexGen Steel expands
