Summary/Purpose
This position will develop solutions to issues associated with bearing, steering, driveline manufacturing and steelmaking. Advanced technical knowledge of material science will be used to improve existing bearing/ steering/driveline products, solve technical problems and develop new products and processes. This position will also work closely with internal plants, customers and suppliers concerning any issue of performance or material properties. This position also involves mentoring less experienced engineers in this field and creating unique analytical methods as needed.
Essential Duties and Accountabilities:
  • Coordinate projects to solve problems related to bearing, steering and driveline material properties, steel cleanliness or heat treatment issues.
  • Analyze data and develop a plan to determine the optimum solution or recommended actions.
  • Analyze and recommend solutions or test programs for customer or supplier issues.
  • Works as an advisor and professional staff with other associates to assist with problems in the specialty area.
  • Develop new or improved products or processes to improve profitability or higher performance.
  • Plans major continuous improvement or product development projects crossing multiple business units including world bearing/steering/driveline businesses and steel suppliers.
  • Prepare technical reports from analysis results; including judgment of results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with metallurgical laboratory equipment
  • Failure analysis
  • Familiarity reading component prints
  • Familiarity with automotive quality systems is preferred. E.G. IATF 16949, CQI-9.
  • Familiarity with industry standards is preferred. E.G. ASTM, AMS and ISO.
  • Good listener
  • Ability to work on a team
  • Strong written communication/technical writing skills required.
  • Presentation and verbal communication skills required, but not critical.
  • Ability to communicate detailed results and provide training to other associates
  • Work with minimum supervision, self-starter with focus on detail, tracking, and documentation.
  • Positive approach; team player; strong work ethic; high integrity.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors or Master's degree in Engineering, Materials Science or Metallurgy
  • MS Degree (preferred) in Materials Science or Metallurgy
  • 10 years experience with MS degree
  • 15 years experience with BS degree
  • 10+ years' experience in industrial production areas and/or laboratory evaluation of material properties with an emphasis of steel.
  • Detailed knowledge of specialized metallurgical laboratory test equipment will be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of heat treatment, steel production, and metal forming processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Project management for large multi-discipline projects is necessary.

  • The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to manufacturing areas which require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.
  • Travel by automobile and plane required approximately 10-20% of time.
